Rick: good morning everyone and welcome to today’s programme – ChitChat – with
me, Rick Patterson.

Sia: And me, Sia Samson. Hi everyone! And Welcome to the first day of the college
year!

Rick: In fact, it will be the first day of college for some of you. And it’s you – the new
students – that we’re focusing on in today’s programme.

Rick: Let’s start with a situation that you’re experiencing today – meeting new people.

Sia: oh no, I remember that. I’m quite shy and I found the first few days difficult. It
wasn’t easy for me to talk to strangers.

Rick: A lot of people find it difficult. It’s easier to talk to new people when you have
something in common – when you have similar interests.

Rick: It’s one of the reasons I started working here at the radio station. I wanted to
meet people who were interested in music. I’ve made lots of great friends here. What
helped you, Sia?

Sia: My name!

Rick: Excuse me?

Sia: Well, I was registering for class and another student standing behind me asked
me about my name. She said it was unusual. So, I explained it's short for 'Anastasia’
and that it was my grandmother's name…

Sia: Then I asked about her family and we had a lovely conversation. She became
one of my best friends - just because she asked me one simple question.

Rick: A simple question but an excellent one! Let's go to our listeners for some
advice. First, we have Stefan. Hi, what advice can you give us?
 Stefan: Hi, well, I've always been shy, like Sia. But I had a very kind teacher at school
who suggested I go to her drama club. I said no.

Stefan: I didn't want to stand up in front of people, no way! But, a few weeks later. I
went. I walked in and everyone smiled at me - it made me feel less nervous. So, I stayed
and I had a great time.

Rick: A smile makes a big difference. Did you keep going to the club?

Stefan: Every week! And now I study drama.

Rick: Wow, that's amazing! Who's next?

Nina: Hi, my name's Nina.

Rick: Hi Nina, what are your tips?

Nina: Compliments and statements! When I want to break the ice, I say something nice
or I make a statement.

Nina: For example, I might say I like your bag! Where did you get it? or I could
comment on a topic like the weather or the class - I really like this class.

Nina: It's fun, isn't it?' The other person gives their opinion and there you go! You can
keep talking about that topic or move on to a new one.

Sia: Y yo, Sia Samson. ¡Hola a todos! ¡Y bienvenidos al primer día del año universitario!
