RECOUNT TEXT
The types of recount text
1. Personal Recount
Personal recount is the kind of recount text where the writer is personally
involved in the story.
a. Diary Entries
A diary entry is a section of writing that has been organized by date. The
entries within your diary are how you organize the thoughts, feelings and
opinions you are pouring into it.
A Page from A Girl’s Diary
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008
It was takbiran night. It was also my birthday, and nothing happened. Or I had
thought nothing would happen, but I was wrong.

That night, I was watching television with my family when I heard someone lit
fireworks in my front yard. I peeped trough my window glass but could see
nothing. It was very dark outside. Then I thought it had to be my cousins who lit
the fireworks. Then I plopped down on my sofa again and tried to concentrate on
the television since my mind raced with disappointment that no one gave
something special on my birthday. I shrugged, it was almost the end of the day
and I became pessimist. Five minutes later my mobile beeped. It was a text from
my friend asking me to come out. Wondering what was going on, I grabbed my
jacket and hurried to the front door. I was surprised to see her bring a bag full of
firework and fire drills. Next I was surprised to see my other friend come out from
the darkness. She brought a beautiful birthday cake on her hands. Oh my God! I
shrieked. Then they gave the cake to me who was too stunned to say anything. I
realized I was blushing furiously because my whole family was watching. Not to
mention my neighbors too!

A plain day, or I thought it was before, turned out to be one of the greatest
moment in my life. I didn’t even know how to describe what I felt. Happy was the
simplest word.

b. Conversation
Conversation is talk between two or more people in
which thoughts, feelings,
and ideas are expressed, questions are asked and answered,or news and informati
on is exchanged.

Example :
Conversation 1
HOLIDAY IN BALI
The first day after the holiday, Ilmi, Tissa and Nina talked in front of the
classroom. They talked very enthusiasm.
Ilmi             : Hello Friends. How are you today?
Tissa            : I’m fine.
Nina            : Me too. How about you Ilmi? Are you fine?
Ilmi             : Of course. I’m fine. Thank you.
Tissa            : By the way, was your holiday great? Tell us about your holiday?
Ilmi             : Ok guys. I went to Bali island last holiday. Bali was the most
popular destination to visited, I think.
Tissa            : Did you go alone?
Ilmi             : Oh no. There were so many places to see in Bali, so my family
decided to join the tours to see as much as possible.
Nina            : What did you do there?
Ilmi             : My cousins stayed in Kuta, so we spent the first two days to
swimming and surfing on Kuta beach.
Nina            : And then what?
Ilmi             : I just stayed in my cousins home for three days after that. It was so
boring to me. Where did you go on this holiday guys?
Tissa            : Owh. Same with you. Nina and me went to Bali island on this
holiday. We visited some tour agents and selected two tours.
Nina            : All right. The first one was to Singaraja, and the second was to
Ubud. On the day of the tour, we were ready.
Ilmi             : What did you do there guys?
Tissa            : My family and Nina’s family drove on through mountains in
Singaraja. Singaraja was a city of about 90 thousands people in the Bali island.
Ilmi             : Yes, I know that. It was a busy but quiet town. The street was lined
with trees and there were many old Dutch houses. That’s right guys?
Nina            : Of course. Then, we returned very late in the evening to some hotel
near the Kuta beach.
Ilmi             : Hmm, nice. Now, please tell me about your experience in Ubud?
Tissa            : Ok. The second tour to Ubud was a very different tour. It was not to
see the scenery but to see the art and the craft of the island.
Nina            : All right. The first stop was at Batubulan, a center of stone
sculpture.
Ilmi             : Yes, I know that. Two years ago, my family watched young boys
were carving away at big blocks of stone in Batubulan. And then?
Tissa            : Of course. The next stop was to Celuk, a cente for silversmiths and
goldensmiths. After that he stopped a little while for lunch at some restaurant in
there.
Nina            : And the last day, we were spent on the beach. We went sailing or
surfboarding along day. We were quiet satisfied.
Ilmi             : Wow, your holiday sounded great. But.. (Kring..) Wow, the bell has
sounded. It’s time to learn in the classroom. That’s right? See you guys?
Tissa            : Of course. See you..
Nina            : See you..

Conversation 2
Zaky : Hi Syifa, long time no see you! how are you?

Syifa : Hi too,i’m fine.How about you?

Zaky : I’m fine too.How is Your new school?

Syifa : There was very convenient. When i started school,i immediately got a lot
of friends. They were all good to me!

Zaky : Is it true?

Syifa : Of course, you know?a week after that,i immediately asked to go to the
waterfall

Zaky : Lucky you.Could you tell me your experience go to the waterfall?

Syifa : Of couse,we left at 8 a.m and up at 9 a.m and then we took break around
the waterfall. And we drank hot tea that my friend brought from her/his home

Zaky : That very good friends. Then what did you do?

Syifa : We played arum jeram and afterwards returned home

Zaky : You brave. Were you not afraid to play like that?

Syifa : The first,now i enjoy it

Zaky : another time i was invited to play arum jeram and introduce with your
friends

Syifa : Well,I have to go now see you

Zaky : See you too

c. Interview
An interview is a conversation where questions are asked and answers are
given. In common parlance, the word "interview" refers to a one-on-one
conversation between an interviewer and an interviewee. The interviewer asks
questions to which the interviewee responds, usually so information may be
transferred from interviewee to interviewer (and any other audience of the
interview). Sometimes, information can be transferred in both directions. It is a
communication, unlike a speech, which produces a one-way flow of information.

Example :
Job Interview
Mrs. Camila asn an interviewer
Mr. Shawn as an interviewee

Mrs. Camila : Good morning, how do you do ?

Mr. Shawn : Good morning, how do you do to
Mrs. Camila : Hello Mr. Shawn thank you for being available today
Mr. Shawn : No Problem, thanks a lot for the opportunity to interview with
you
Mrs. Camila : Yes well, I’ve got your CV here, but could you tell me a little
bit more about yourself, please ?
Mr. Shawn : So, I am an English teacher and I’m bery interested in ways
people can learn English through ne technologies and new mediums. Also I’ve
taught in many different countries, and I’ve worked with different kinds of
classes like large groups, bussines students, children and one-on-one classes
Mrs. Camila : Okay, next what is your biggest achievment ?
Mr. Shawn : Well, last year I passed the Delta course, which as I’m sure
you know is one of the highest qualifications inEnglish language teaching
Mrs. Camila : wow that’s awesome. And what have you doing recently ?
Mr. Shawn : hmm... recently I’ve been looking at how can I help more
people by making entertaining and educational youtube videos for people to
watch and learning English
Mrs. Camile : Well Mr. Shawn, thank you very much for interviewing with
us today. It’s been very interesting, and se’ll be in touch very soon as to whethet
your application has been sucessfull
Mr. Shawn : okay well thanks for your time too

2. Factual Recount
a. Scientific Report
A scientific report is a document that describes the process, progress, and or
results of technical or scientific research or the state of a technical
or scientific research problem. It might also include recommendations and
conclusion of the research.
Example:

Identification of a Compound using Melting and Boiling Points

Introduction

One of the primary methods used to characterize a new compound is the physical
determination of its normal melting and boiling points.  The “normal” melting and boiling
point is the temperature at which a substance melts or boils when the barometric pressure is
760 mmHg or 1 atm.  In this experiment we will first calibrate our thermometers using ice
and water, whose normal melting and boiling points are well characterized as 0.0 °C and
100.0 °C, respectively[1].  Following this, we will measure the normal melting and boiling
points of an unknown compound.  We will use this data to determine the identity of our
unknown from a list of possible unknown samples and physical data from the Chemical
Handbook[2].

 Experimental Procedure

As described in the lab manual,[3] ice was placed in a beaker and warmed until
approximately 50% had melted.  The temperature of the ice/water mixture was then measured
with a thermometer. This was followed by a similar measurement of our solid unknown.  In
part II, water was heated until boiling and the temperature of the liquid/gas mixture measured
with a thermometer.  This was followed by a similar measurement using our unknown
compound.  To get the best results possible, the procedure in the manual was modified by
repeating each trial three times.

Data & Results

The Barometric pressure in the lab was measured to be 761.2 mmHg.
Table One – Experimental Data

Standard deviation (s): ± 0.06 ± 0.15 ± 0.15 ± 0.06
95% confidence limits: ± 0.14 ± 0.4 ± 0.4 ± 0.14

 * This trial was eliminated because the thermometer was broken (there was a bubble of air in
the mercury).  A new thermometer was obtained from the stockroom and used for all other
data.

Observations: The unknown was yellowish-orange in color and had a fruity smell.

As can be seen from our water data the experimental values for the melting and boiling points
of water differed from the theoretical values by +0.15 °C and +1.1 °C, respectively.  These
differences were used to calibrate the average data for the unknown.  Thus the corrected
values for the unknown boiling and melting points are given in Table 2.

Table Two – Corrected Temperatures

  Unknown 7 Unknown 7

Melting Pt. Boiling Pt.

Measured value 80.4 °C ± 0.4 (95%) 272.80 ± 0.14 °C (95%)
Correction +0.15 °C + 1.1 °C
Corrected value 80.5 °C ± 0.4 (95%) 273.90 ± 0.14 °C (95%)

These values were used to identify our unknown.  Table Three below lists possible unknowns
and the melting and boiling points for these compounds found in the Chemical Handbook.2

Table Three – Reference Data from Chemical Handbook

Compound Melting Point Boiling Point
Blabber Gas -15.8 °C 17.2 °C
Freezer Gel 82.7 °C 456.1 °C
Silly Putty 57.2 °C 121 °C
Billgatesium 1000 °C unknown
Farsel Juice 80.8 °C 274.0 °C
Shampoo -1.2 °C 108.7 °C

Based on these data we conclude that our sample was probably “Farsel Juice” since both the
melting and boiling points fall within the confidence limits of our average melting and
boiling points.  Additional evidence to support our conclusion is that Farsel Juice is described
in the Chemical  Handbook as having a yellowish-orange in color and has a “peach-like”
smell.  Our unknown was this color and one of our group members observed a “fruity” smell
when she opened the bottle.

Although our measured melting and boiling points differed from the theoretical data by a
few percent, this difference was very small leading us to believe that our results were quite
good.  While there is still room for error in our results due to the change in boiling and
melting points as a function of atmospheric pressure this difference should be very
small.  Other factors such as contaminates in the water used may have affected the results, but
again every effort to minimalize such effects was made by using only deionized
water.  Finally we did encounter some problems with our thermometer in the first trial, but
this was fixed by replacing it at the stockroom.  Thus our careful work, our additional color
and smell observations, and the fact that the corrected average of data exactly matched only
one of the choices with 95% confidence, all suggest that our unknown was in fact Farsel
Juice.

Conclusions

In this lab we determined the identity of our unknown to be Farsel Juice using normal melting
and boiling points.  A future experiment might include an additional calibration using the
barometric pressure and/or inclusion of other chemical properties such as reactions of the
compounds with acids and stuff to further test the nature of the chemicals and more positively
identify the chemicals.

b. Police Report
A police report is the physical record of an incident deemed to be illegal or
potentially illegal. It is taken by a representative of a police department and filed
according to said department's procedure. It is also known as an "incident report."
Example :

Date: 15.8.17

Author: Magee 2187

On Tuesday August 6th, three men were involved in an armed robbery of a

security van outside the Abbey National office in Lee High Street.

The men were seen by three witnesses who agree that they were of stocky build.
Two of the men were over six feet tall and the third was shorter, about 5 foot 7.
They all wore hoods which covered their faces and therefore we have no
information on their features.Only one man spoke. It is said he spoke in a soft
Irish accent, believed to be from southern Ireland. All three men wore dark
clothes and two of them had jeans. The only distinguishable feature belonged to
the slightly shorter man who had a tattoo on the lower part of his right leg. It is
not known what this tattoo was. It appears the men drove down the High Street in
a Ford Fiesta. They were seen waiting in the car by a number of passers-by. As
the security van approached, the two men in the back of the car were seen to
leave the car and walk along the road towards the Abbey National. Then, when
the van stopped, the guards got out and, straight away, the two robbers moved
behind them. Each robber was seen producing a gun.

Next, the guards were told to lie on the floor and while one robber watched over
them the other took the keys to open the van. While the van was being opened the
driver of the getaway car was seen driving, at speed, to the Abbey National. The
car stopped behind the van and the money was transferred to the car from the van.
After loading all the money the two robbers jumped back into the car and sped off
down the High Street. Another witness spoke of seeing the blue Fiesta in question
turn down Arnold Drive. Later the car was found abandoned on the site of the old
Odeon cinema. Neither guard received any injury and there were no shots fired.

c. Newspaper Report
A news report is similar to a news article. It is the basic facts of a story that
is currently happening or that just happened

Titanic

Orientation

On April 15, 1912, Titanic, one of the British largest and luxurious liners, sank
into the North Atlantic Ocean which about 400 miles south of Newfoundland,
Canada.

Event

That giant ship which carried 2,200 passengers and crews had struck an iceberg.
Two and a half hour later the ship sank into the deep North Atlantic Ocean at 2:20
a.m.

From that tragedy, more than 1,500 people went down in the sinking ship. Some
of them froze to death in the icy North Atlantic water and around 700 people
(high class woman and children) survived.

Unfortunately that giant luxurious ship was not equipped with much more
lifeboats and good emergency procedures so that the victims of that tragedy were
more than the half passengers and crews.
Newspaper 2
Mayoral Candidate David Pearson Wins Close Election
Democrat David Pearson became the newest mayor of Danville after a close
election ended Tuesday night. Pearson defeated his opponent, Republican Shirley
Owens, by just 27 votes. Many local officials had predicted a close race, but no
one knew it would be decided by such a slim margin. After the results came in
late Tuesday night, Pearson held a press conference at his campaign headquarters
to announce his victory and thank his opponent.
“I want to thank Shirley for running a clean campaign and keeping things civil,
despite a few of our heated debates,” Pearson said to a round of applause. Pearson
was surrounded by his family, including wife Trina and son Michael, as well as
several top members of his campaign staff. Pearson only spoke for a few minutes,
clearly tired after a long day of awaiting results.
Surrounded by friends and family, Shirley Owens spoke from her office on the
other side of town. “Most importantly, I want to thank the citizens of Danville for
participating in the political process, and I have loved meeting and working with
so many of you over the past two years,” she said before congratulating Pearson
on his win. She spoke for ten minutes before taking a few questions. According to
Owens, she hopes to continue working in the local government, although she
announced no specific plans.
Several citizens of Danville were surprised that Owens lost, as she had come out
ahead in several polls taken over the past few months. However, most local
residents were not very concerned with the results, as the majority of the town
noted that both Pearson and Owens had similar views on many popular issues.
This election actually had one of the lowest turnouts in Danville history. Sarah
Burgeson, a local representative who works on the election board, attributed this
to people’s lack of concern for either candidate. “Most people felt David and
Shirley had similar views, so they weren’t really concerned with choosing one
over the other,” said Burgeson. Pearson is expected to take over as mayor at the
beginning of next month.
Reorientation

That tragedy became popular again some years later after James Cameron
directed a movie entitled Titanic in 1997.

The movie that was inspired by the tragedy of the sinking titanic was a fiction
story about the members of different social class who meet in that ship and fallen
in love. It was the best movie at that year and still remembered by a lot of people
around the world until now.

3. Imaginative Recount
Imaginative recount text is a type of recount text that tells the author's
imagination about something and is written in the form of past tense.
Example :
Spiderman

Orientation

I was dreaming of being super hero when I was a teenager. I imagined myself as
Spiderman.

Event

One day, when I was fishing at the river I was bitten by a spider and luckily I was not
dying. At first I felt cold for 24 hours and I was alone in my room. Nobody knew
about it. I didn’t tell my family because I was affraid they would angry with me. After
that, something had happened in my body and I still did not recognize it. I lived as I
did usually, went to school, go home, eating, doing some activities and so on.

I realized at the first time that I had a super power was when I was getting an accident.
I rode a motor cycle and suddenly there was a bus crashed me. I bounced out of the
road and my motor cycle was totally broken. But at that case, I did not feel any hurt.
There was no blood out of my body.I was angry at that time because the bus did not
stop and escaped. I run after it and I didn’t know why I could run so fast and jump so
high. I jumped to the back of the bus and climbed it like a spider. I went to the front,
stooped the bus and took the driver out of the bus door. I knew that I was no more
normal human being. I did nothing more to the bus driver. I went back home and
decided the next action to do after that.

Reorientation

I did nothing like the Spiderman at the movie that help people to catch the criminals. I
was an opportunist super hero. I was afraid of killing people so that I hide my power
from anybody else. I used my power only when I or my family and friends got into
dangerous.
