1.0 INTRODUCTION
This assignment covers analyse the principles of vapor-liquid equilibrium and solution thermodynamics to
solve chemical engineering problems where students are expected to lay the theoretical foundation for
applications of thermodynamics to gas mixtures and liquid solutions.

This assignment has two (2) questions that address two (2) course outcomes and one (1) programme
outcome (PO) which are mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WP) and the required
knowledge profiles (WK) as shown in Table 1.

4.0 DESCRIPTION
QUESTION 1
One of your coworkers verified that the hydrocarbon mixture containing 30% mole hexane and 70% mole
heptane is in an ideal gas state at temperatures of 120 °C and 30 bar. Proved that his statement was not
accurate by estimating the fugacity. Please state your assumption while performing your working steps and
answer.

QUESTION 2
Table 1 shows a set of data which was obtained from vapor liquid equilibrium experiment for tert-butyl ether
(1)/dichloromethane (2) system at 308.15 K.

ii. Predict the pressure and vapor phase composition for this system. Compare percentage error of the
answers with the experimental data by showing in P-x1-y1 plot. Explain whether the chosen model
adequately describes the experimental data.
(20 marks)
Your task in QUESTION 1 is to estimate fugacity and comment based on its findings. In QUESTION 2, you
are required to explain data consistency and the correlation between the chosen model and the
experimental data.
This section summarized the criteria to be evaluated in the assignment. The detailed rubric for each area
is given in the appendix.
