The reaction is so exothermic that ignition is possible. The resulting solution, which is colorless, is often used as a source of
sodium methoxide, but the pure material can be isolated by evaporation followed by heating to remove residual methanol.
The solid hydrolyzes in water to give methanol and sodium hydroxide. Indeed, samples of sodium methoxide are often
contaminated with Sodium methylate.
The compound absorbs carbon dioxide (and water vapor) from the air, thus diminishing the alkalinity of the base.
In the solid form, Sodium methylate is polymeric, with sheet-like arrays of Na+ centers, each bonded to four oxygen centers.
The structure, and hence the basicity, of Sodium methylate in solution depends on the solvent.
Sodium methylate is a significantly stronger base in DMSO where it is more fully ionized and free of hydrogen bonding.
Applications
Organic synthesis
Sodium methylate is a routinely used base in organic chemistry, applicable to the synthesis of numerous compounds ranging
from pharmaceuticals to agrichemicals.
As a base, Sodium methylate is employed in dehydrohalogenations and various condensations.
Sodium methylate is also a nucleophile for the production of methyl ethers.
Industrial applications
Sodium methylate is used as an initiator of anionic addition polymerization with ethylene oxide, forming a polyether with high
molecular weight.
Biodiesel is prepared from vegetable oils and animal fats, that is, fatty acid triglycerides, by transesterification with methanol
to give fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). This transformation is catalyzed by Sodium methylate.

In recent years, sodium methylate has become the catalyst of choice for many biodiesel producers around the world.
The benefits of using sodium methylate as a catalyst include higher biodiesel yield, lower purification costs and more
consistent quality than what can be achieved using caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or caustic potash (potassium hydroxide).
Formulation or re-packing
Sodium methylate is used in the following products: fuels, pH regulators and water treatment products, laboratory chemicals
and pharmaceuticals.
Release to the environment of this substance can occur from industrial use: formulation of mixtures and manufacturing of
the substance.
Sodium methylate, now available in commercial quantities, is a versatile reagent for organic syntheses.
Formerly Sodium methylate was prepared in solution as needed in the laboratory, and its early commercial applications used
the same procedure. But the solvent-free powder offers such advantages that it is now taking its rightful place among the
reagents used in the fields of pharmaceuticals, dyes, perfumes, and organic intermediates.
Sodium methylate may be employed either to supply the user's entire requirement of the reagent or to build up the
concentration of the dilute solution prepared in the user's plant.
Although very common in the research laboratory , the use of the alcoholates in industry has until recently been limited by
the fact that they have not been available commercially.
The preparation of the alcoholate by the user himself is represented by the simple reaction:
In practice, however, the procedure is not quite so simple. Sodium is a reactive metal to be used …

The clear, colourless Sodium Methylate in methanol liquid is the most commonly used catalyst in biodiesel production.
Key factors are the good availability on the market and the markedly lower price compared to other alternative catalysts such
as Sodium Hydroxide (KOH), for example.
The alcoholate Sodium Methylate is a daughter product from electrolysis of Sodium Chloride and is virtually anhydrous.

Product Description
Sodium Methylate is used as an initiator of anionic addition polymerization with ethylene oxide, forming a polyether with high
molecular weight. Biodiesel is prepared from vegetable oils and animal fats, that is, fatty acid triglycerides, by
transesterification with methanol to give fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs).
This transformation is catalyzed by Sodium Methylate.
Sodium methylate (sodium methoxide) is usually provided in a solution of methanol. The methoxide will react with any water
present to form sodium hydroxide.
Therefore, any piping material chosen must also be compatible with methanol, water, and sodium hydroxide that might be
present. Fortunately, a wide variety of materials are compatible with these chemicals including most stainless steels.
Materials to be avoided would be aluminum, carbon steel and cast iron which would react poorly to this very basic
environment.
General description
Sodium methylate is a sodium alkoxide.
Sodium methylate is reaction with unactivated aryl bromides in the presence of copper catalyst under various reaction
conditions has been studied.
Sodium methylate reacts with aryl halides in the presence of a palladium catalyst in DMF to afford arenes.
Application
Sodium methylate may be used as an alkali catalyst for the production of fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) from vegetable
oils via transesterification.
Sodium methylate has been used in the preparation of 5-(3-azidopropyl) uridine.
Sodium methylate may be used in the synthesis of methyl 2-cyano-lup-3-hydroxy-2-en-28-oate (CN-BA), a 2-cyano
derivative of betulinic acid (BA).

organic products
Sodium Methoxide is mainly used as agricultural chemicals, partly as dyestuff, chemical industry, biodiesel, etc.
Reactivity Profile
Sodium methylate is a strong base. Reacts with light metals forming H2 gas, with fire and explosion hazards. Too rapid
addition of sodium methylate to a mixture of chloroform and methanol initiated an uncontrolled exothermic reaction between
the chloroform and the methylate that caused a violent explosion [MCA Case History 693 1961].
Sodium methylate is incompatible with 4-chloronitrobenzene and fluorinated cyclopropenyl methyl ethers, such as
perfluoromethoxycyclopropene. The reactions are vigorous and may initiate ignition [Bretherick, 1995, pg. 191].
Physical dangers
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

Chemical dangers
Heating may cause violent combustion or explosion. Reacts violently with water. This produces flammable methanol and
corrosive sodium hydroxide. The substance may ignite spontaneously on contact with moist air. The substance is a strong
reducing agent. The substance is a strong base. It reacts violently with acid and is corrosive. Attacks many metals. This
produces flammable/explosive gas (hydrogen - see ICSC 0001).
