LESSON 1: VOCAL MUSIC OF THE


ROMANTIC ERA

Art Song
During the Romantic Era, composers busied themselves experimenting ways to express
music, such as the use of composition lengths, new harmonies, and tonal relationships. The
piano was used as a means to express emotions in the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic
qualities of Romantic Era music.

Art Song was popular during Romantic era.

The following are the characteristics of Art song:


 It is a short composition for solo voice.
 It is mostly accompanied by the piano.
 The pianist is not mere accompaniment but an
equal partner to the singer.
 In an art song, poetry is set to music, which
further enhances the poem.
 Art songs may be strophic where a tune is
repeated for each stanza, or it may be through-
composed where different musical setting for
each stanza are present.
 It ends with a section played by the piano.

Opera
It is an art form presented in a theatrical setting
where singers and musicians perform a dramatic
musical work combining text and a musical score.
Romantic era composers focus on folklore, history,
folk music, and nationalism that serve as inspiration.
Mozart – one of the well-known Romantic opera
composers
- He composed Die Zauberflote
(The Magic Flute)

Other distinct opera titles are E. T. A. Hoffmann’s Undine (1816), and Carl Maria von
Weber’s Der Freischutz (1821) and Oberon (1826)

Examples of Italian operas include that of Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers (1813) and
II Barbiere di Siviglia (1816).
- Both have sparkling melodies, brilliant arias, and ensembles, and fast
moving plots.

Richard Wagner – a German composer


- produced Rieniz (1842) and The Flying Dutchman (1843)
- They are characterized as Italian-style operas, with duets, arias, duets,
trios, and even choral pieces.
- Also known for his Tannhauser (1845), Lohengrin (1850), Tristan and
Isolde (1865), and Parsifal (1882).

Franz Schubert
- a famous composer during Romantic era
- a son of a schoolmaster, who came not from a rich
family
- He can play the piano, the violin, and the organ.
- He is an excellent singer.
- The first public performance of one of his works
titled Italian Overture in C Major was in Vienna,
Austria and is largely credited for creating the
German Lied.

Guiseppe Verdi
- an Italian Romantic composer
- His music was been influenced by musicians like
Saverio Mercadante, Gaetano Donizetti, and
Giacomo Meyerbeer.
- He is famous for operas like Aida, Otello, Don
carlos, Falstaff, and la Triviato.
- His works are known all over the world.
Requiem – one of his famous works and was written in honor of his
friends, Alessandro Manzoini, who died in 1873.
- This work is now performed as an oratorical piece in the field of opera.

Richard Wagner
- He is popular for a number of his opera
composition such Tristan and Isolde and the
Ring Cycle.
- He attended school in Dresden, Germany, and
he wrote his first drama when he was 11 years
old and his first composition at age 16.
- His influenced may still be heard as background
film scores in movies like The Lord of the Rings
and Harry Potter series.
