Define the spring constant.
LESSON Sketch, plot and interpret load–
OBJECTIVES extension graphs
ELASTICITY
Elasticity is the ability of an object or material to
return to its original shape after being stretched
or compressed
MEASURING EXTENSION
MEASURING EXTENSION
Arrange a spring as in the figure.
Read the scale opposite the bottom of the
hanger.
Add 100g loads one at a time and take the
readings after each one.
Calculate the extension by subtracting
original length from the new length.
Hooke’s Law states that the force applied is
directly proportional to the extension
provided that the limit of proportionality is
not exceeded.
The spring constant,
k is the force needed
per unit of spring F = ke
extension F is the force (Newtons,N)
k is ‘spring constant’
(Newton per centimetre, N/cm)
e is the extension (centimetre, cm)
