Assessment 3: Task
Scenario
One of your neighbours is a qualified aromatherapist with a small business selling hand-
made candles and soap (Dot’s Soap & Candles). As one of a small group, you recently did
some research for her into how another local business was using social media (see Outcome
2 task). She found your group’s reports extremely useful, and has asked you to follow up
with some advice as to what her social media strategy should be. Again, she has offered to
pay for this advice, so you must address the task in a professional way.
You are not (yet) an expert on social media, just an ordinary user but you can call on your
fellow students to help you, perhaps the same group of four-five people who compiled the
reports your neighbour requested earlier. You call a meeting designed for each person in the
group to present information on one piece of necessary social media ‘knowhow’, with the
aim of arriving at a set of recommendations.
Each person in your group should select one of these topics: (or suggest any other relevant
contribution).
How to use FaceBook® for business (including advertising).
Using TwitterTM for promotion (including hashtags and how they can help).
The pros and cons of blogging on the business website.
The pros and cons of Google+TM, including using GoogleTM ads.
The pros and cons of using InstagramTM/PinterestTM.
The pros and cons of selling via Amazon®, ebayTM and EtsyTM (or any one of these).
The pros and cons of using a media management platform like Hootsuite® or
BufferTM.
You should all take a look at the advice from the Federation of Small Businesses on
managing social media, and it would be useful to read the Sage Small Business Guide to
Social Media, which is freely downloadable from:
http://www.sage.co.uk/business-advice/growing-and-running/small-business-guide- to-
social-media.
This general advice will help your team decide what guidance they should offer to Dot’s
Soap and Candles, with its staff of one. You need to bear in mind, at all stages, that the
business owner has limited time available to her. She is already running sales parties twice a
month, taking part in Craft Fairs every quarter and supplying two shops (in relatively small
quantities). She is going to supply by post too once the website is set-up. In addition to this,
she has to make the products she sells.
Once you have chosen your topics, draw up an agenda for your meeting with an item for each
member of your group. The final item on your agenda should be ‘Agreed Recommendations’.

Each person should prepare briefing notes or perhaps PowerPoint® slides to support his or her
agenda item presentation, and should aim to speak for about four to five minutes. You will, of
course, ask each other questions or make comments.
Finally there will be a full discussion and the group will decide what to recommend to Dot,
together with any references to resources that may help her.
