Question 7

Read the following article and answer the questions (a and b) ( 10 marks)

How to use hand sanitizers effectively

COVID 19 pandemic has engulfed the whole world with its tentacles. As a result, we even
doubt someone’s touch and breath. The best ways of preventing the spread Of virus, according
to the World Health Organization (WHO) are washing hands with soap and water, wearing
masks and maintaining the social distancing and using sanitizers only if there is a lack of soap
and water because washing hands with soap and water is more effective than using sanitizer.
Therefore, understanding the use of sanitizers is important for everyone. First, it is better to
know the function of hand sanitizers. The WHO has recommended alcohol based hand
sanitizers. An effective sanitizer should contain 60% or 70% of alcohol. This is because
alcohol is known to kill germs by destroying or breaking up the protective outer proteins of
microbes and dissolving the membranes of germs. According to the WHO, the virus can be
deactivated within 20 seconds of sanitizer usage.

How to choose the correct hand sanitizer :-

Even though the sanitizer with 60% alcohol is recommended by the WHO, there are also
menthol based sanitizers in shops. Menthol based substances, according to various studies, are
found to be detrimental to the skin because menthol can be toxic when it is rubbed on the skin.

How to apply hand sanitizers :-

The recommendation of the WHO is to apply a coin-sized amount of the substance. It is a must
to rub the sanitizer over your hands and fingers thoroughly for about 20 – 30 seconds making
sure to cover both sides of the hands and between the fingers. But it is wrong to apply hand
sanitizers when your hands are visibly dirty. Therefore it is better to apply sanitizers after
washing your hands with soap and water.

How to store hand sanitizers after use :-

Keep in mind that hand sanitizers are alcohol based substances. Therefore, the consumers must
be aware of the fact that hand sanitizers should be stored in a dry, cool location avoiding direct
sunlight.

However, unfortunately, while our dedicated healthcare workers and doctors have already
geared up to beat COVID 19, many people are found applying sanitizers not as a

precautionary measure but as a perfume to avoid the body odor and wearing mask even
below the chin. However, to avoid untimely deaths what is best for us to do is to follow the
medical advice and instructions correctly.

Paper 11

Part A- Reading skills (50 marks)

Question 01

Read the passage given below in which some words are given in bold type. Then, underline the
meaning that is most appropriate to the context for the words given in bold type from 1-10.

(10 marks)

Blue collar, White collar ,Green collar ?

The climate clock keeps ticking. As the US looks to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement and
strengthen its commitment to climate change mitigation policies, new business opportunities
should abound. For starters, electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to reach price parity with
internal combustion engines vehicles by 2024. This clearly has motivated Amazon, the world’s
largest retailer, to boost its investment in electrifying its delivery fleet. All signs point to the
emerging importance of the green business economy.
The rise of “green collar” jobs represents great opportunity for job creation and will be a
salvation to many workers whose jobs will be eliminated by new policies around industrial
carbon cuts or automation. Over the past decade, digital transformation has turned every
company into a tech company. As every business becomes a green business, organizations will
need to train green collar workers to combine tech skills with domain-specific training in
environmentally-friendly business processes.
On-demand labour platforms like Task Rabbit and Uber have helped normalize the gig
economy, providing a platform for ad hoc tasks to be completed by freelance workers. As the
Corona virus pandemic forces a re-think of entrenched work culture norms, the opportunity
arises for disruption of professional services via the gig economy. But the tools to move
towards a less exploitative and more just platform economy will be essential – with strategies
that involve transparency, accountability, worker power and democratic ownership. Much of
the conversation around jobs in the Fourth Industrial Revolution pivots around the importance
of so-called knowledge workers and creativity-based work.
The takeaway: computers and software will not be able to replicate human creativity. While
some manual labour will indeed be eliminated by intelligent machines, far more jobs will be
augmented by them.
In the wake of the pandemic, logistics operations have looked to on-demand automation
services like Fetch Robotics to enable social distancing and safe work environments in

warehouses. The COVID-19 pandemic represents an inflection point that will significantly re-
shape the future of work over the next five years – and likely beyond.

Question 02

Read the following text and answer question (1) and (2).

Secrets of a Happy Brain

The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains
have developed this way because threats, like dangerous animals, had a more immediate effect
on our ancestors’ survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you
likely know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy?

Research suggests that our level of happiness depends partly on factors we cannot control – our
genes and our life circumstances. But our level of happiness is also shaped by the choices we
make. If you’ve been chasing wealth, fame, good looks, material things, and power, you may
be looking for happiness in all the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following
seven habits make people happier.

People who form close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of
friends we have is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships
that bring happiness usually involve the sharing of feelings, mutual respect, acceptance, trust,
fun and empathy.

People who make a habit of caring for the wellbeing of others tend to be happier. This might
involve volunteering for an organization or reaching out to support friends and family on a
regular basis.

People who exercise regularly improve both their physical and mental well-being. Some

PROVINCIAL DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION –WESTERN PROVINCE Page 7

8

research has shown that exercise can be as effective as medication in treating depression.

When we are so interested in an activity we enjoy that we lose track of time, we are in a state
of flow. The activity could be making art, playing piano, surfing, or playing a game. People
who experience flow in their work or hobbies tend to be happier.

People who include spirituality in their daily life tend to be happier. Practicing spirituality is a
way of recognizing and trying to understand the wonder and beauty of existence. Some people
do this by going to a place of worship or praying. Some people practice yoga or meditation.
Some people go for long walks in nature.

People are more likely to be happy if they know what their strengths are and use them
regularly. People who set goals and use their strengths to achieve them tend to be happier.
People are especially happy when they can use their strengths to serve the greater good.

People who think positively by being grateful, mindful, and optimistic are more likely to be
happy. Being grateful means being thankful. Being mindful means being open to, focusing on,
and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful
about the future.

Question 04
Fill in the blanks based on the information given in the following passage. Use only one word
for each blank. (05 Marks)
Long ago goods were manufactured by craftsmen or skilled workmen. Each craftsman
was proud of each article he made. He spent much time and took much trouble in making it,
and people paid a high price for the finished product. All the luxurious Persian carpets, the
beautiful Chinese pottery and the intricately woven Dumbara mats were made in this way. But
these articles were bought only by the rich. The poorer classes had to be satisfied with goods
which were crudely and cheaply made.

But when the population of Europe increased, there was a greater demand for cheaper
goods of better quality. These had to be produced or manufactured in factories and workshops
where hundreds of workers could be employed. The invention of the steam engine helped
manufacturers by giving them cheaper power to operate their machines. Machines took the

the site. Many were injured and a few even died.
