1900s
C. E. Utt’s children wait for their father to take them driving in the car which they called “Old Duro.” The year was 1908.
There’s a lot of disagreement as to which Tustin resident bought the first automobile,
but one thing is certain. He or she had to be wealthy.
As the 1899 rolled into 1900, automobiles were a novelty that could be enjoyed only
by the very rich. Most people still used the horse and buggy or a bicycle to get
around town and a train for long distances. Many believed the automobile would
never catch on. “Get a horse,” was often heard, especially when a driver was
struggling with a flat tire or other problem.
Horatio Augustus Allen, who owned an EMF, certainly qualified as one of the
wealthiest men in Tustin. He owned 80 acres, all planted to walnuts with the
exception of 15 acres of Valencia and Navel oranges. EMF was produced in 1908 by
Wayne Motor Co. which had merged with Northern Motor Car Co. The four-cylinder,
five-passenger car sold for $1,250.
Cap Ozum, the wealthy yachtsman who built his Los Alisos estate on Main Street
near Tustin Avenue in 1902, was known for his stable of fine horses, each with its
own groom. But when the automobile bug bit him, he sold the horses, turned the
barn into a garage and hired mechanics to keep his autos in top shape. Mrs. Ozum
drove a bright red roadster and scandalized the locals as she raced along Tustin’s
dusty roads.

Martha Preble, wife of J.O. Preble, was driving her own car in Tustin in 1912. A
socialite and a musician who belonged to the Ebell Society and Santa Ana chapter of
Eastern Star, she drove alone in a small, one-seat Maxwell two-cylinder. The popular
Maxwell was manufactured from about 1904 to 1925. By 1914, the company had
sold 60,000 cars.
Martha Stevens, wife of Sherman Stevens, another early female driver, had the only
electric car in Tustin. The shiny black coupe which was steered by a tiller, rather than
a wheel, was kept in the Steven’s carriage house.
Porter Luther, son of James Ervin Luther, an apricot and citrus grower with a ranch
on Yorba Street, had a sporty Hupmobile roadster. Sam Nau and John Dunstan were
other citrus growers who bought automobiles early on.
Sam Tustin bought a Buick touring car in 1915, but he often left it in the shed where
he stored it. An amusing, supposedly true story, says that one day a man asked Sam
why he was riding his bicycle instead of driving his Buick and Sam replied that he
was in too big of a hurry to get it out of the shed.
Regardless, he eventually donated the car to the Tustin Chamber of Commerce and it
was converted into a fire truck for the volunteer fire department. The vehicle, which
served for many years, is in the Tustin Area Museum.
Sensing a need in Tustin around 1913, Robert J. Wiley constructed the building, which
is still standing, at the corner of Third and C Street. He opened an agency for
Chalmers Motor Car Co. located in Detroit, but Chalmers’ were expensive cars for the
period, perhaps too expensive since by 1915 Wiley had sold the building to William
Huntley and Nicholas Gullick who opened Tustin’s first garage.
Henry Ford changed the status quo when he started manufacturing the Model T. By
the 1920s, cars were a common sight on the streets of Tustin.
