Course: PPD (Power Plant Diesel)

Competence: A-III/1.F1.C4: Operate main and auxiliary machinery and associated control
systems A-III/2.F1.C1: Manage the operation of propulsion plant machinery
A-III/2.F1.C2: Plan and schedule operations
A-III/2.F1.C3: Operation surveillance, performance, assessment and maintaining
safety of propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery
Course Outcome no.1: Differentiate the construction and the operating principles of two-stroke from
four-stroke marine diesel engines.
Learning Outcomes: Solve fuel consumption, revolution per minute, power output, mechanical
efficiency, indicated horse power, brake horse power, friction horse power to
check engine performances.
Topic: Topic 10 Engine Performances:
 Fuel Consumption,
 Revolution Per Minute,
 Power Output,
 Mechanical Efficiency,
 Indicated Horse Power,
 Brake Horse Power,
 Friction Horse Power
Activity Plan: Solve computational problem on engine performances: fuel consumption,
revolution per minute, power output, mechanical efficiency, indicated horse
power, brake horse power, friction horse power to check engine performances
Individual Activity: Calculate the given solving problem
Assessment Criteria: 1. Students will be given 30 minutes to finish the task/s.
2. Show the solution in each given problem
Threshold: The group must get the score of 9 out of 12 (75%) in order to pass the activity.
The activity will be graded using RUBRICS below.

Direction: Solve the given problems using the given formula. Show your solution in the space provided.

1. Find Indicated Horse Power using the formula: IHP = PmLAN (kW)

60000 x 2

A four stroke diesel engine has an rpm of 720 and a mean effective pressure of 10 NM², the length of stroke is
180mm and has a cross sectional area of the bore is 100mm². What is the indicated horse power?

2. Find power output using the formula: P = (n x ( π / 4 ) x D2 x L) x p x N

We have an 8-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine at 2000 RPM, with a bore of 115mm, a stroke of 135mm and
a BMEP of 10 bar. What is the power output of the engine in mechanical horsepower?
3. Find the engine displacement using the formula: D = [ (π x (B/2)2 x S ) x C ] x 0.000001Our engine has 8
cylinders, a bore of 100mm and a stroke of 78mm. What is its displacement?
