Replacing the Spectra PC or Spectra LS

These instructions describe replacing a Spectra PC or a Spectra LS (Spectra

Library Server) module in the T200, T380 and T680 libraries. Except where
noted, both modules are referred to as either the control module or the
Library Control Module (LCM) in these instructions. The LCM controls
and manages all aspects of the library operation.
The figures in this document show the Spectra T380 library. The relative
locations of the components and the procedures for replacing them are the
same for both the Spectra T200 and Spectra T680 libraries.
Depending on when you purchased your library, it may have either a
Spectra PC or a Spectra LS installed. Figure 1 shows the external
components on the Spectra PC and Figure 2 shows the Spectra LS.
Note: Depending on the Assisted Self Maintenance (ASM) service level
you purchased, the control module may not be included in your
on-site ASM kit.

Prepare for the Replacement Ensure ESD Protection

Ensure ESD Protection

The repair environment for the library must be free of conditions that
could cause electrostatic discharge (ESD). To protect the library from ESD,
follow these procedures when repairing or testing the library:
 Place a static protection mat on the work surface used while removing
and installing library components. Use a 1-megohm resistor to ground
the static protection mat.
 Wear a static protection wristband whenever you handle library
components that have been removed from their anti-static bags.
Connect this wristband to the static protection mat or to other suitable
ESD grounding.
 Keep all electronic components in anti-static bags when not in use.

Examine the Replacement Component

During the replacement procedure, the memory card in the existing
control module is transferred to the replacement control module. If you
suspect memory card corruption or the replacement control module you
received is different from the one that is malfunctioning, you cannot
transfer the memory card from the old control module to the new one. See
the Spectra T120, T200, T380, or T680 Memory Card Replacement for
information on saving your library configuration and transferring it to the
new memory card.
Unpack the replacement control module and determine if it is the same
type of module as the one you are replacing. See Figure 1 and Figure 2 on
page 3 to identify the type of module.

Discontinue Data Transfers

If the control module is malfunctioning, you may have no control of the
library through the operator panel or through the BlueScale web interface
(RLC). A malfunctioning control module can also affect robotics, drives,
RIMs or QIPs. All media moves are interrupted when the control module is
removed. Discontinue data transfer processes before beginning the
replacement procedure.
1. Use your storage management software to stop any data transfer
operations running to the library.
2. Use your storage management software to move any cartridges that are
currently in drives back to their storage locations.
If you cannot use your backup software, then move the cartridges as
described in the Spectra T200, T380, and T680 User Guide.

Power off the Library

To power off the library, press and hold the front panel power button
(Figure 4) for approximately six seconds. At this point, the button’s LED
will start flashing. The power-off sequence takes approximately one
minute while the library allows applications to shut down gracefully.
Note: If the library does not respond to pressing the front panel power
button, it is likely that the BlueScale Soft Power option is enabled.
Refer to the Spectra T200, T380, and T680 User Guide for
instructions on powering off the library with the BlueScale Soft
Power option enabled.

Replace the Control Module Transfer the Memory Card

Transfer the Memory Card

The memory card in the control module contains library configuration
information. Unless the memory card is suspected of being corrupt, it
should be transferred. Transfer the memory card from the control module
you just removed into the new one.
Note: The Spectra PC uses a compact flash memory card; the
Spectra LS uses an SD memory card. If the replacement control
module you received is different from the one you removed, you
cannot transfer the memory card from the old control module to
the new one.

If a memory card was shipped with the new control module, contact Spectra Logic
Caution Technical Support for instructions (see Contacting Spectra Logic on page 2). Do not
install the memory card from the control module you just removed in the new
control module unless specifically instructed to do so. Installing a corrupted
memory card can cause the new control module to fail.

Use the following steps to transfer the memory card.

1. Remove the replacement control module from its packaging.
2. Using a #1 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws securing the
protective cover plate on the back of the control module. Set the cover
plate aside.
