Characteristics of bitumen asphalt for roads and airfield pavements modified by

nanosilica

Abstract: Asphalt pavements are internationally regulated to provide standard performance.

As the bitumen quality is getting inferior day by day, this shows increase in occurrence of
various types of distresses associated with asphalt mixtures.in order to improve the
performance and behavior of bitumen binder; it has to be engineered through the addition of
some additives so that an acceptable level of asphalt performance is maintained for roads and
runways.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the Marshall characteristics of asphalt modified by 2%,
4%, 6% and 8% nanosilica by weight of bitumen binder. Addition of nanosilica in bitumen
binder increases the viscosity of asphalt and improves the rutting & fatigue resistance of asphalt
mixture. Damage and distress characteristics of modified asphalt are evaluated to ensure
improved performance of asphalt mixture for roads and airfield pavements.
