Candidates need to be able to understand simple written information such as signs and
newspapers, and produce simple written English.

Listening: 30 minutes approximately

Candidates need to show they can follow and understand a range of spoken materials such as
announcements, when people speak reasonably slowly.

Speaking: 8–10 minutes

Candidates take the Speaking test with another candidate or in a group of three. They are tested
on their ability to take part in different types of interaction: with the examiner, with the other
candidate and by themselves.

The Speaking test lasts 8–10 minutes. You will take the test with another candidate. There are
two examiners but only one of them will talk to you. The examiner will ask you questions and ask
you to talk to the other candidate.

Part 1 (3–4 minutes)

The examiner will ask you and your partner some questions. These questions will be about your
daily life, interests, likes and dislikes. For example, you may have to speak about your school,
hobbies or home town.

Part 2 (5–6 minutes)

You and your partner will speak to each other. The examiner will give you a card with some
illustrations on it. You will then discuss the activities, things or places illustrated on the card with
your partner. The examiner will then ask you and your partner some individual questions about
the illustrations on the card.

Making friends at university

Angus
My university has an internet group for new students, which I joined
before I went. One person on there said that on her sister’s first day,
she brought sweets from home to offer to everyone she met, as a way
to start a conversation. I thought that was a good idea, so I did the
same. It worked, but in fact, the really good friends I have now are all
people I met a few weeks later.

Frank
I live at my university, and Mum and Dad drove me here on my first
day. After they left, I felt terrible. I sat alone looking at photos of friends
from home. But later, I went to a talk about all the university clubs, and
I really enjoyed it. Clubs are a great way to meet people, and if you’re
going to university, you should join some. They helped me a lot. Before
I came to university, I was a quiet person, but these days I can talk to
people more easily.

Zac
I was away on holiday with my parents for the first week of my
university course, so I missed all of the activities where people make
friends. On that first morning, I couldn’t get online, so I went looking
for someone who knew what to do. The student I found got my
wi-fi working and is now my best friend. I’ve also met lots of people
because of him. Mum and Dad say I’ve grown up since I started
university, but I’m not sure.

PART 3
QUESTIONS 14–18
For each question, choose the correct answer.

Amazing balloon flight

Tom Morgan flew 25 kilometres across South Africa using only 100 party balloons.

Tom Morgan is a British man who started a club planning adventures for people. His idea is
to give people some danger in their lives, as he thinks we don’t have enough of that these
days. The adventures he plans include races across various countries using unusual types of
transport.

Last year Tom went to Africa for a crazy adventure with some friends. The plan was to tie
100 party balloons to a chair Tom was sitting in, and make it fly into the air. Tom’s not the
first person to do this. Jonathan Trappe from the USA has done it, but it was an article in
an adventure magazine that made Tom want to try it.

Tom chose the country of Botswana for his adventure because it has lots of empty space and
isn’t near the sea. However, the weather was so windy there that they lost lots of balloons,
so they went to South Africa instead. This time, the flight was a great success.

Tom says the views from 2,400 metres up were amazing, and remembers how quiet it was.
However, he spent most of the time worrying about what to do if he flew too high and how to
get back down.

One reason Tom did his balloon flight was to check if it’s possible to fly using party balloons.
Now he knows it is, he’s planning the first party balloon air race in Africa. He hopes lots of his
club members will enter.

Reading and Writing

My favourite film
Rafa
The first time I saw Silver River was at my friend’s house. It’s the story
of two families, which didn’t sound very interesting to me, but actually
I loved it. I saw it again last week, and I enjoyed it just as much. The
actors are good and so is the story, but what I really love is the music
– it’s brilliant. When the film first came out, not many people went to
see it, but it’s a lot more popular now.

Dan
For me, Forest Path is the best film ever. It’s about a musician who
leaves his home in Mexico and goes looking for adventure. He travels
around the country for a year, playing his guitar everywhere he goes.
At the end of the film, he meets the woman who becomes his wife.
This actually happened in real life many years ago, which I didn’t know
when I first saw it. The acting is very good, especially the woman –
she has more acting experience than the man.

Claudio
I can’t remember when or where I first saw Black Hole, but it’s a film I
like to watch at least once a year. It’s about travelling through space,
and to me the acting and the story are not important – it’s the way it’s
filmed. It’s like a dream and nothing seems real. At the time, this was
a new way of making films and since then lots of people have copied
the idea. The music is very beautiful, and the final moments always
make me cry.

PART 3
QUESTIONS 14–18
For each question, choose the correct answer.

My life as a tour guide

Kerri Benson talks about the job she loves.

I was looking for work after I finished university when a friend of mine told me about her
fantastic job as a tour guide. She was able to help me get a job with her company and now,
every two weeks, a driver and I take a group of tourists across five European countries by
coach.

Before each tour, the driver takes the coach from the city where the last tour finished to the
one where the next tour starts, but I fly there. When I get to the hotel, I make sure I have all
the right forms and visas for the new group of tourists. It’s important that I have everything.

I’m friendly towards the tourists, but I always remember that they’re my customers. There’s
no boss to help with problems, which can be difficult, but I love it when our coach is full of
happy people, excited about their trip.

The company has a website for all of the tour guides to share information. Some post
information about journey times, but that changes so quickly it’s not very useful. My posts
are usually about interesting museums, castles and things like that. And I read other guides’
ideas for restaurants to take customers to.

This is a job for people who enjoy travelling and planning. If you’re thinking of doing it, go on
a tour as a customer first. It’s a good way to see what guides do. Just remember that guides
don’t get paid much. For me, that’s not a problem, but it might be for some people.

Three great campsites to visit

Hillside
This campsite is quite near a main road, so it’s easy to find. You can camp there anytime you
like, even in winter, which is why most of the things to do are inside – the pool, the games
room and the café. Families will enjoy it here, as the pool is very safe and there’s a lovely
playground. It’s also very quiet at night – there’s no disco or noisy groups of campers. The
staff are good, but they should try to be more friendly.

Green Farm
You can easily get lost on the way to Green Farm if you don’t know where you’re going.
There are lots of activities for adults and teenagers to do on the campsite, including a golf
course and a lake where you can go fishing and sailing. If you’re interested in surfing, you
should probably choose a different campsite, as Green Farm is quite a long way from the
sea. If you need to buy food, there’s a small supermarket next to the office.

Castletown
Castletown is right next to a village, and just a short walk from a beach. It’s open from April
to October. It’s probably not the best place for older people or young children, as there’s
a disco in the village that plays loud music until quite late. The shops in the village are very
useful, as there aren’t any on the campsite. Campsite staff can help you with any problems
or questions, and are always smiling and chatting with visitors.

PART 3
QUESTIONS 14–18
For each question, choose the correct answer.

An exciting hobby
Tanya Phillips explains why she’s crazy about motorbikes.

I started riding a motorbike when I was 18. I was living in Edinburgh at the time, and I was
using the bus to get to work, which I hated. I thought about learning to drive, but cars are
expensive, so I bought a motorbike. I was the first of my friends to get one.

Over the next 5 years, I only used my motorbike in the city. Then a friend invited me on a
motorbike ride through the Australian desert. It was amazing, and when I got home, I bought
an adventure motorbike and started riding in wild places like forests in my free time.

Before any big ride, I make sure I know exactly where I’m going. I don’t like asking for
help, so I take maps and check the weather. Then when I’m riding, I can just forget about
everything except me and the bike. That’s what I like best.

I’m not afraid of riding in unusual places. I went to Iceland in the middle of winter. It was dark
most of the day, so I had to be really careful and stay on the roads. I’d like to go again in
summer when there’s more light and then I can go on the smaller paths.

This year, I did my first 24-hour adventure motorbike race – across the African desert. It was
really difficult, and when I finished all I wanted to do was sleep. But then I found out I was the
winner – I couldn’t believe it! I can’t wait to enter next year’s race.

Future stars of classical music

Eugenia
My mother and father both play the violin in an orchestra, so that’s
what they began teaching me to play, even before I went to school.
Now I’ve finished university and I’m a member of the same orchestra.
I believe it’s important for everyone to go to see music being played.
Tickets are expensive, but it’s a much better experience than just
listening to recorded music. Over the years, I’ve won a few violin
competitions and I love making music with my friends.

Laura
When I was a child, my father had a café and the only music there,
and in our house, was jazz on the radio. But when I was 12, I went
on a school trip and heard classical guitar for the first time. I loved it,
and my mother bought me a guitar and paid for lessons. My parents
couldn’t believe it when I came first in a national guitar competition.
I’ve left university now, but I’m still learning new things every day.
There’s so much information online.

Ellie
I’m now playing in my university orchestra and taking classes there in
writing music, which is what I want to do as a career. I love using the
internet to discuss things I’m working on with other musicians. I was
lucky to be able to have classical violin lessons at school and, by the
time I was eight, I was in the children’s orchestra and playing in local
competitions. In my opinion, more schools should offer music lessons.
Music is so important.

PART 3
QUESTIONS 14–18
For each question, choose the correct answer.

A lucky teenager
Fifteen-year-old British student Jonathan Davis has always loved learning about the past. So,
when he saw a newspaper article about people who enjoy looking in the countryside for very
old things made of metal, such as coins, he wanted to try the hobby himself.

To get started, he had to have something called a detector. You hold this machine over the
ground, and it makes a loud noise if there is metal there. He bought a small one and began
using it near the village where he lives.

He didn’t find much for the first few months. Then, one day, he and a friend were looking in
a field. ‘We were a bit bored,’ he says. ‘But suddenly, I found a few bits of metal lying in the
grass. As soon as I saw them, I had a feeling they might be really old, so I showed them to my
friend. We kept looking, and together we found 200 more pieces that day!’

Jonathan took the pieces to a museum. The staff there told him they were almost two
thousand years old. They explained that at that time people sometimes cut silver bowls and
cups into small pieces, and then used the pieces as money.

The museum later had a special exhibition of the silver pieces, which Jonathan went to. He
said, ‘It was really exciting to see what the people at the museum were able to do to clean
the pieces of silver and find out exactly what they are. They look really different now. I’m so
pleased I found them and that now other people can see them too.’

Goodbye!

Commentary and mark

A very good attempt at the task. The content of the message is Content 5
relevant to the task and all three elements of the message are clearly Organisation 5
communicated. The text is coherent and connected using basic
Language 5
linking words and cohesive devices (It is, there, and, also). Everyday
and less common vocabulary (beautiful city, by car, historical places, Total 15
monuments, restaurant) is generally used appropriately. Simple
grammatical forms are used with a good degree of control
(we stayed, biggest theatre), although we went to is overused.

Sample answer B

Dear Giuseppe,
I am visited Venezie in Italy. It’s a big city with a lake, and In the lake
there are some boat. I bought a blomet and white mask. I’m visited Penre
Vecehis, too…

Commentary and mark

A satisfactory attempt at the task. The first and third parts of the Content 3
message have been communicated, but the second part has not been
Organisation 3
addressed. Also, the candidate has addressed the letter to the wrong
person. The text is coherent, using basic linking words (with, and, too). Language 3
There is some control of grammatical forms (It’s a big city, I bought). Total 9
Apart from mask, the vocabulary is basic. There are errors in grammar
(I am visited, there are some boat), but meaning can still be determined.

because you must NOT speak during the test.

P ART 1 Now look at the instructions for Part One.

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Question 1 One. What temperature will the woman use to cook the cake?
Woman: I’m going to put the cake in the cooker now. The temperature’s at
one hundred and forty degrees. Is that enough?
Man: That’s a bit low. I think a hundred and eighty is better.
Woman: Why don’t I put it in at a hundred and sixty because I think
a hundred and eighty is too hot?
Man: All right. I hope it’s good!
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 2 Two. What did Clara hurt when she played tennis?
Man: Hi, Clara, do you want to play tennis?
Woman: Sorry, I played yesterday, and I hurt myself, so I can’t play today.
Man: Your foot again? You had problems with that last week as well.

stronger than I think!
Man: I hope you feel better soon.
Now listen again.

Question 3 Three. Which photo did the man take?

Woman: These photos are great.
Man: Thanks. But they’re not all mine. Just the one of the flowers. I’m
choosing one to put on the wall in my new apartment. I like the boat
picture best.
Woman: Oh, I prefer the one of the birds.
Man: Yes, it’s nice. I’ve tried to take photos of birds before, but I wasn’t
quick enough.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 4 Four. Which was the woman’s favourite present?

Man: Wow, you got lots of birthday presents!
Woman: Yes, I’m lucky. Mum usually gets me a book because I love reading.
But not this time because the one I really like isn’t available yet.
Man: OK, but that jumper looks nice.
Woman: It is, but I’m not sure about the colour. Anyway, this bag from my
sister’s the perfect size. Just what I wanted.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 5 Five. What did Tom lose?

Woman: Hi, Tom. You look sad.
Man: Yes, I can’t find my mobile. I took it to Mark’s party last night.
I thought it was in my bag with my wallet when I left, but it wasn’t.
Woman: Is this it? It was under my jacket when I was leaving. I thought it
might be yours!
Man: Wow – thank you!
Now listen again.
[repeat]
That is the end of Part One.

PART 2 Now look at Part Two.

For each question, write the correct answer in the gap. Write one word or a number
or a date or a time. Look at questions 6–10 now. You have ten seconds.

Test 1 answer key

You will hear a phone message about going to play a hockey match.
Man: Hi, Sarah, it’s Tom. I just wanted to give you some details about
next week’s hockey match against a new team called Tigers.
We usually play on Tuesday, but we’re playing later in the week, on
Friday. That’s when everyone’s available next week.
We’re going to their village for the match. I don’t think you’ve been
there before, but it’s a good place to play. The village is called
Ledbury, that’s spelled: L-E-D-B-U-R-Y. Write that down because
it’s not easy to get there, and you’ll need to find it on a map. Sorry,
but there’s no bus that goes to the village, so you will need a car.
We can go together.
Oh, can you pick up some drinks for the match? I’ve got all the
equipment we need, and Sally’s bringing fruit for after the match.
Please don’t be late. Meeting at eight p.m. should give us enough
time to practise before we start playing at eight forty-five. We’ll be
home before ten, tired, but happy we won, I hope! See you next week.
Now listen again.
[repeat]
That is the end of Part Two.

P ART 3 Now look at Part Three.

For each question, choose the correct answer. Look at questions 11–15 now. You
have twenty seconds.
You will hear Sue talking to her friend Peter about a restaurant she went to.
Sue: It’s a pity you couldn’t come to the restaurant with us last night,
Peter.
Peter: Yeah, I wanted to come, Sue, but I wasn’t well last week, and
I forgot I needed to finish some work. How was the restaurant?
Sue: Great! I’d like to go there more often. The last time I went there was
two years ago. The waiter said it’s been open for five years already,
and it’s so popular that they had to open a new room a year ago.
Peter: Oh! What did you eat?
Sue: The restaurant’s famous for pasta, but we all chose pizza, which
was delicious. Maybe I’ll get the steak next time – it looked good!
Peter: Isn’t the chef from Italy?
Sue: Actually, he’s from the USA. And our waiter was Spanish, so it’s
a very international place!
Peter: I have to go there! Come with me – I need you to tell me the best
things on the menu. I’ve only got Wednesday night free next week,
but I suppose it’s quiet then, so I won’t have to book a table.
Now listen again.

Question 16 Sixteen. You will hear a man and a woman talking about going shopping. What will
they buy?
Man: Are you ready to go into town?
Woman: Yes, do you want to try on the coat that you saw last week?
Man: I’d rather go another day… I’d like to go to the bookshop. There’s
a book I want.
Woman: Great, I’ll come with you to get the financial magazine I like. Shall we
pick up a pizza for dinner?
Man: Hmmm… I’ll cook instead.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 17 Seventeen. You will hear a woman leaving a message for a friend. Why is the
woman phoning her friend?
Woman: Hi, Stephanie! I was going to come round to your place this
afternoon. I’ve got that book I agreed to lend you, but guess what?
My car’s not working, so I’ll have to wait for it to be repaired this
afternoon. I’m going to the theatre after dinner tonight, so we’ll have
to meet another time. I hope that’s OK – sorry!
Now listen again.

Question 18 Eighteen. You will hear a man telling his sister about meeting someone yesterday.
Who did he see in town?
Woman: Did you have fun in town?
Man: I only went for a newspaper, but do you remember Michael?
Woman: The man you live next door to?
Man: Not that Michael – the one who was in my class when I was a kid?
We were best mates. He was in the shop and we had a good chat.
He’s got an amazing job as a pilot.
Woman: Cool!
Now listen again.

Question 19 Nineteen. You will hear two friends making plans for the day. Where do they decide
to go?

Question 20 Twenty. You will hear a city tour guide giving a talk. Why is the museum closed
now?
Man: This is the National Museum. I’m afraid we won’t be able to go
inside today, which is a pity because it’s just been painted and looks
lovely. You’ll notice some roads are closed too – that’s because an
important visitor’s arriving today – the Queen! She’s here on holiday

people! You and your cousin Elias play golf together, don’t you?
Woman: Yes, we did last year, but now we play volleyball together.
Man: And with your neighbour, Daniel, you play tennis, don’t you?
Woman: Daniel hurt his arm and can’t play tennis any more, so we go fishing
together instead.
Man: And your friend Amira? Does she like sport?
Woman: Yes, we’ve started going to the pool every week, but she’s not sure
she likes it. She’d like to join a badminton club soon.
Man: What about Kelly?
Woman: When she’s not playing football, we go skateboarding in the park
together.
Man: Do you do any sport with your brother, Ryan?
Woman: Yeah. He plays a lot of golf, and sometimes I go too. He’s teaching
me. Maybe in the future I’ll teach him to be a better swimmer!
Man: You should! And I saw you going somewhere with Valerie yesterday.
Were you carrying tennis rackets?

Part 6
Sample answer A

Hello Chris, the party it will be at my house, at half past seven p.m., you
need to wear a green T-shirt, a pair of red trousers and a white hat.

Commentary and mark

A very good attempt at the task. The content of the message is Content 5
relevant to the task and all three parts of the message are clearly
Organisation 4
communicated. The text is connected using a limited number of basic
linking words and cohesive devices (it, and). Simple grammatical forms Language 5
are used with good control (will be at, at half past seven), although Total 14
some language is taken from the task (you need to wear). Everyday
vocabulary is used appropriately (green T-shirt, pair of red trousers,
white hat). There are very few errors (the party it).

Sample answer B

The party start at nine o’clock. The party is in my home, my house is in

CoRe street twenty-nine opposite the church. You need to wear at haff-
past eight.

Commentary and mark

A satisfactory attempt at the task. The first two content points in the Content 3
task are addressed. However, the third point may have been
Organisation 2
misinterpreted, so the reader is only on the whole informed. The text is
organised mainly through the use of punctuation and a limited number Language 3
of cohesive devices. The candidate has used some basic relevant Total 8
vocabulary (home, house, church), and some simple grammatical
forms are used with some degree of control (at nine o’clock, is in).
Errors may impede meaning (CoRe street, to wear at haff-past eight).

A young girl was going on her snowboard when after a jump her

was really sad because they were her favourite pair of sunglasses.
Fortunately she found them on the snow.

Commentary and mark

A very good attempt at the task. All the content points are successfully Content 5
addressed, and the target reader is fully informed. The text is
Organisation 5
connected and coherent, using a number of basic linking words
and some cohesive devices (when, so, and, them, because they). Language 5
Everyday vocabulary is used appropriately and correctly (sunglasses, Total 15
sad, favourite, snow). Simple grammatical forms are used with a good
degree of control (after a jump, she took her snowboard and looked
for them, she was, Fortunately she found them). Errors are minimal
(sunglasses fell).

Sample answer B

Today I went in Bielmonte for skiing.

In a specific jump the wind was very strong and my classes were flied.
When I backed in the snow I didn’t find the glasses and when I started to
tuch the snow I found it.

Commentary and mark

A satisfactory attempt at the task. All three parts of the story are Content 4
communicated. However, the descriptions of picture 2 and picture 3
Organisation 3
are not completely clear because of vocabulary errors (my classes were
flied, I backed in the snow). However, meaning can be determined in Language 3
both cases. The text is connected using simple linking words (and, Total 10

simple grammatical forms with some control (was very strong,
in the snow, I didn’t find, I started).

from the airport at 3 o’clock!
Man: Oh, I arrived at 2. I told you the wrong time to meet me, sorry.
Woman: But a taxi from the airport’s so expensive. Did you take the bus?
Man: My colleague Andy gave me a lift. That’s why I’m home so early.

Test 2 answer key

PART 2 Now look at Part Two.

For each question, write the correct answer in the gap. Write one word or a number
or a date or a time. Look at questions 6–10 now. You have ten seconds.
You will hear someone talking on the radio about a competition.
Man: I want to tell you about a very exciting short story competition. It’s
for sixteen-year-olds, so if you are one or know one, listen carefully.
There are some brilliant prizes. Three stories will win a camera. But
the best story will win a computer. A fantastic prize, I’m sure you’ll
agree.
There are some special things to say about the story. It must be
seven hundred and fifty words exactly. Eight hundred is too many,
and seven hundred is too few.
It can be a funny story or a happy story. But there’s one word you
have to use, and that’s ‘snow’. So, your story could take place in
winter. Or in the mountains perhaps.
You must send your story to us by the nineteenth of June. It’s the
third of June now, so you have two weeks to get the perfect
story ready.
Upload your story to our website – it’s www.carrow.com. I’ll spell
that for you: C-A-double R-O-W. You can see all the details of the
competition there too.
Now listen again.

present tomorrow. Are you free after breakfast?
Man: I’ve got football practice, Lily. And you’ve got a swimming lesson at
three o’clock.
Woman: The shops are open until nine. Shall we go about seven o’clock?
I can meet you in town.
Man: Perfect!
Woman: Let’s get some earrings. There’s a good jewellery shop in town.
Man: Hmm. It’s expensive… Can we look in the department store?
Woman: OK! There are some nice things there. They sell jewellery on the
market too, but they’re old things.
Man: Yes… Are we going to have a party for Mum? I know! How about
taking her out for lunch?
Woman: Or have a barbecue in the park?

it wasn’t going to be very nice, but it was perfect.

Sample answer A

Your welcome. I’m selling because I think it is old and I don’t like the

Commentary and mark

A very good attempt at the task. All three elements of the message are Content 5
fully communicated, and the target reader would be fully informed. The
Organisation 4
text is connected and coherent, using mainly basic, high-frequency
Language 4
linking words with a limited number of cohesive devices (because, and,
It is). The message uses simple grammatical forms with good control Total 13
(I’m selling, I think it is, I don’t like). Basic vocabulary is used generally
appropriately (old, the colour, nice day). Errors are minimal and
meaning can easily be determined (Your welcome, in Sunday).

Sample answer B

old laptop. I want not much but one hunderod pound it is okey for you.
Can you give address I will pring you but can I take the money early

Commentary and mark

A satisfactory attempt at the task. The third point in the task has been Content 3
misinterpreted, as the candidate has not told Jan where to collect the
Organisation 2
laptop, but instead has offered to deliver it. The other two content
Language 3
points are addressed successfully. The text is connected using a
limited number of basic linking words (but, because). The message Total 8
uses basic vocabulary reasonably appropriately (new/old laptop,
address, money) and simple grammatical forms with some control (You
are welcome, I want, can I take). However, some errors (I will pring you,
I need to much) may impede communication.

The candidate uses everyday vocabulary generally appropriately (best Total 14

Man: I’m trying to do more exercise. I walk a lot, but it’s not very
interesting.
Woman: Other activities are definitely more fun! I enjoy cycling.
Man: I get a bit worried on a bike – there aren’t many safe places to cycle
nearby.
Woman: Really? Well, have you tried running? You can do it anywhere, so it’s
not difficult.
Man: I’m probably not fit enough!
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 17 Seventeen. You will hear a woman talking about jobs. What did she want to be
when she was younger?
Woman: I really enjoy my job – I’ve been a journalist for nearly ten years now,
and I sell my stories to different newspapers. I mainly write about
chefs and cooking. But I had different plans when I was a teenager
and wanted to be a painter. However, I realised most artists don’t
earn much money, so I decided on something different.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 18 Eighteen. You will hear two friends talking about going out. Where do they agree
to go?
Woman: What would you like to do for your birthday?
Man: Well, I go to the movies every week, so I’d prefer to do something
different. I love listening to classical music, particularly pianists.
Woman: Great! Let’s look online for something with piano music.
Man: OK. I’d like to see the new collection at the art museum too, but
I can do that on my own.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 19 Nineteen. You will hear a woman talking to her friend about finding a new job. Why
does the woman want the job?
Woman: I’ve just been to an interview for an office job. I really like the place,
even though it’s quite a long way from my house.
Man: How was it?

Woman: Well, it’s just temporary, so the work mightn’t be very interesting,
but I like the staff, so I think it’ll be fun.
Man: Do you think you’ll get the job?
Woman: I hope so!
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 20 Twenty. You will hear a woman talking to her brother on the phone. Why is the
woman happy?
Woman: Hi, Jake!
Man: You sound happy. Did you get that great job?
Woman: Not sure yet. But while I was coming back from the interview,
I started chatting to a lovely woman. I said I was looking for a flat in
the area.
Man: And did she know somewhere?
Woman: Yeah. I went to see it, it’s perfect, and I’m moving in next week!
Now listen again.

That is the end of Part Four.

P ART 5 Now look at Part Five.

For each question, choose the correct answer. Look at questions 21–25 now. You
have fifteen seconds.
You will hear a husband and wife talking about the furniture they need for their
new home. What do they need for each room?

Man: I think we need a few things for our new apartment. Let’s make a list.
Woman: The dining room’s a really sunny room, I’d like something
comfortable to sit on and read near the window.
Man: Good idea! What about the kitchen?
Woman: Well, our old table will look great, but we need something to put our
plates and cups in. Do we need anything for the living room?
Man: I’d like to use a corner for studying. I’ve got a chair and some
pictures for the wall, but I need something to work on and to put the
computer on. What about the bedroom?
Woman: We’ve lots of cupboards, but I think we need more light. It’s a bit dark.
Man: OK, and the bathroom?
Woman: It’s a nice light room, and I think we’ve got most things, like a mirror,
but what about putting that painting of the boat in there?
Man: OK, what about the garage?

Part 6
Sample answer A

Dear Jerry,
Hi there! How are you? Hope you are fine. I’m writing to ask you if you would like to go to the
countryside this weekend.
We’ll do many things such as eating, playing sports and games, chatting and many others.
By the way, Jenny is coming too! I invited her so that the trip would be more interesting
and because she is our friend.
Hope you can make it! Write soon!
Take care, Nadia

Commentary and mark

A very good attempt at the task. All three parts of the message are fully Content 5
communicated. The text is connected and coherent, using a range of
Organisation 5
linking words and some cohesive devices (such as, others, her, so,
Language 5
because). The use of grammatical forms is well controlled (I’m writing
to ask you if, We’ll do, is coming too, I invited her, would be more Total 15
interesting). Vocabulary is used appropriately, although there is some
repetition of language from the task (to the countryside this weekend).
There are no errors.

Sample answer B

Hi Jerry,
Can you go with me to the countryside, this weekend. Can we play a lot of games, and we
can have a lot of time for talk and see a movie, for example. Please, come with me.
Bye, Anna.

Commentary and mark

A satisfactory attempt at the task. The first two parts of the message Content 3
have been communicated, but the final part has not been addressed,
Organisation 3
so the reader is only on the whole informed. The text is reasonably
Language 3
coherent, although the use of linking words is limited (and). There is
some control of grammatical forms (we can have, a lot of, see a movie), Total 9
but the vocabulary is only basic (games). Some of the language is
taken from the task (go with, the countryside, this weekend).

Part 7
Sample answer A

It was a sunny and hot day. And Jim went for a run.
It was so hot that Jim wasn’t very well so he remember of the Peter’s café but it was
500 meters and Jim was so tired that he couldn’t heaven walk. What was he going to do?
Wait! That’s right, the Jose’s store is in the final of the street.
So Jim went there and Jose was attending a costumer. Jim went to the drink’s section
and bought three bottles of water.
Jim learn something with this, that it was not a good idea going on a run when it is hot
outside.

Commentary and mark

A good attempt at the task. All the content points are dealt with, Content 5
and the target reader will be fully informed. The text is coherent and
Organisation 5
connected through the use of basic linking words and cohesive
Language 4
devices (that, it, so, there, this, when). Everyday vocabulary is used
appropriately (sunny, café, store, bottles of water). Simple grammatical Total 14
forms are used with control (It was so hot, Jim wasn’t very well). Errors
are frequent (he remember of, he couldn’t heaven walk, attending
a costumer, Jim learn something with this), but meaning can still
be determined.

Sample answer B

A man was running in the street when he had to stop because was so
much hot.
Then he saw a supermarket in front of the street so he was buy water
water to drink.

Commentary and mark

A satisfactory attempt at the task. All three parts of the story are Content 4
communicated, but only with a minimum amount of detail. The text
Organisation 3
is connected using basic linking words and some cohesive devices
(when, because, Then, so). There is some basic relevant vocabulary Language 3
(street, hot, supermarket, water), and some simple grammatical forms Total 10
are used with some degree of control (was running, had to stop, he saw,
buy water). Errors are noticeable (was so much, in front of the street),
but the meaning is clear.

Test Four. There are five parts to the test. You will hear each piece twice. We will
now stop for a moment before we start the test. Please ask any questions now
because you must NOT speak during the test.

PART 1 Now look at the instructions for Part One.

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Question 1 One. What has Paul bought Timothy for his birthday?
Woman: Hi, Paul. Have you got Timothy the book you wanted to buy for his
birthday?
Man: I saw him reading it, so I had to get something else!
Woman: What have you bought?
Man: Well, I thought about a T-shirt or a bag for his sports things. But the
bags were a bit too expensive. So I got him something to wear, look!
Woman: He’ll love it!
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 2 Two. Where did John go last weekend?

Woman: Hi, John. What did you do last weekend?
Man: Well, I wanted to see the new comedy at the movie theatre, but
there weren’t any tickets left.
Woman: Didn’t Bob want you to go to soccer practice with him?

Man: Yes, but he was sick, so I went swimming instead.

Woman: Well, that’s good exercise and you can see the movie another day.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 3 Three. Where’s Sally now?

Man: Hi, Sally. I’m at the bus station, but I can’t see you. Is your bus late?
Woman: Hi. So sorry, I missed the bus and drove into town. I’ve just found
a space in the car park and am getting my ticket. Could you walk up
the road to the market? I’ll be there in two minutes.
Man: Sure. See you soon.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 4 Four. Which sport is the woman going to do at the sports centre?
Woman: I’d like some information about doing sport here.
Man: Our tennis classes on Wednesday evenings are very popular.
Woman: Oh, that’s no good, I work late on Wednesdays.
Man: What about swimming? The pool’s open every day. We also have
a new diving club on Friday evenings.
Woman: Oh, that sounds good. I like swimming, but I’d like to try
something new.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 5 Five. What has the woman bought for her new apartment?
Man: I love your new apartment.
Woman: So do I. It’s so much bigger than my old one. There’s lots of space
for all my furniture.
Man: I don’t remember that lamp behind the sofa.
Woman: It was in a sale. I got it on my way home yesterday. I might go back
to the store – they’ve got some really cheap bookshelves too.
Now listen again.
[repeat]
That is the end of Part One.

P ART 2 Now look at Part Two.

For each question, write the correct answer in the gap. Write one word or a number
or a date or a time. Look at questions 6–10 now. You have ten seconds.
You will hear a coach driver telling tourists about their visit to an animal park.

Test 4 answer key

Man: We’ve now arrived at Langate Animal Park. You’ll be here all
morning, so you’ll be able to see everything. It might rain, so please
take your umbrellas.
This is a popular place with visitors. There are lots of interesting
animals, but most people know Langate for the monkeys. There are
also over four hundred different kinds of trees from around the world.
I can see you’ve got your cameras – lots of visitors get great
pictures by the river. At this time of year, there’s not much to
photograph by the lake.
If you’d like to learn more about the park and what lives in it, there’s
a talk at ten fifteen by the park guide, and it finishes at ten forty-five.
There’s a lovely café where you can get lunch for only eight pounds
ninety-nine, but if you only want a drink, you can get a coffee for two
pounds sixty.
The coach will pick you up at one thirty at the entrance called
Chepstow – I’ll spell that: C-H-E-P-S-T-O-W. Enjoy your time here!
Now listen again.
[repeat]
That is the end of Part Two.

PART 3 Now look at Part Three.

For each question, choose the correct answer. Look at questions 11–15 now. You
have twenty seconds.
You will hear two friends, Sophie and John, talking about planning a picnic that
they have every year with neighbours.

Man: I can’t wait for this year’s picnic with our neighbours, Sophie!
Woman: And I’m planning it this year, John.
Man: That’ll be easy – everyone loves eating outside.
Woman: Yeah, and it’s how I’ve gotten close to my neighbours. That’s why
it’s special.
Man: Cool. Where will we have the picnic this time?
Woman: At the local park – my yard isn’t large enough.
Man: You could have it at the lake?
Woman: It’s too far away.
Man: Everything went well last year!
Woman: Well, it didn’t rain, so that was lucky. But no one came until an hour
after the start time!
Man: Right, our neighbour forgot to put his house number on the
invitation!
Woman: Yeah, but it was great when we finally found his place.
Man: What should everyone bring?
Woman: I’ve got enough burgers, and forks and stuff.

Test 4 answer key

Man: What about activities?

Woman: Great idea! I’ll ask people to bring games.
Man: How should we tell everyone about the picnic?
Woman: I’ve already emailed most people.
Man: Then you won’t need to go round and tell people about it?
Woman: Right.
Man: But I could put some posters in a few places to make sure everyone
knows about it.
Woman: Sure.
Now listen again.
[repeat]
That is the end of Part Three.

P ART 4 Now look at Part Four.

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Question 16 Sixteen. You will hear a woman giving a talk. What’s the woman’s job?
Woman: If you don’t mind spending some of your time outside, then my
profession’s something you should consider. Me and my team are
building a bridge at the moment – this project might help farmers
who’ve got fields on different sides of a river. It’s really beautiful
countryside; and very popular with artists, so we don’t want to spoil
the view.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 17 Seventeen. You will hear a man talking to his sister about a new friend. Where did
the man meet his new friend?
Woman: How was your weekend?
Man: Great! I went cycling with my friend, Paul. I don’t think you know him.
Woman: Is he in your football team?
Man: I don’t think he’s into football. He’s a colleague. He started at the
company two months ago.
Woman: Another salesman! Well, invite him to come round here with you on
Friday. There’ll be great people, music and lots of food!
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 18 Eighteen. You will hear a husband and wife talking about going to the cinema. Why
do they decide to walk to the cinema?
Man: Do you still want to go to the cinema this afternoon?
Woman: Sure. The film starts at three – there’s a bus at twenty-five to which
should get us there on time. Then I won’t need to use the car.

Man: Why don’t we walk instead? We spend too much time indoors. Let’s
get some fresh air.
Woman: OK. We can be healthy for a change!
Man: Yes!

[repeat]

Question 19 Nineteen. You will hear a man telling a woman about his holiday. What problem did
he have on the holiday?
Woman: How was your holiday?
Man: Good, but I’ve slept better since I got back – I won’t miss that loud
music every night, my room was above the nightclub! But I’m having
trouble getting used to this cold weather now I’m home.
Woman: It’s nice going away somewhere warm in winter.
Man: Yeah. The beach wasn’t like the ones here, which are often covered
in rubbish.
Now listen again.
[repeat]

Question 20 Twenty. You will hear a girl talking with her dad about learning a new language.
What did the girl like about her first Chinese lesson?
Man: How was your Chinese lesson?
Girl: Well, it was hard work learning a new language for a full hour –
about half that time would be better. And I was worried before the
lesson started because I didn’t know anyone, but I think everyone
felt as nervous as me!
Man: And the teacher?
Girl: She gave us lots of enjoyable exercises that stopped everyone from
getting bored!
Now listen again.
[repeat]
That is the end of Part Four.

PART 5 Now look at Part Five.

For each question, choose the correct answer. Look at questions 21–25 now. You
have fifteen seconds.
You will hear two friends talking about a party on the beach. What will each
person bring to the party?

Woman: Are you coming to my beach party on Sunday?

Man: Yeah!
Woman: Ben’s bringing a football – he’s got a new one, so we can have
a game before our picnic.

Woman: She’s got a blanket we can use. At first, she wanted to bring
a beach umbrella, but they already have them there.
Man: Is Jacob coming?
Woman: Yes, he works for a company which makes sunglasses, so he’s
bringing us some – for free! I’ve seen photos of them on their website!
Man: Brilliant!
Woman: And Suzana’s just been on holiday. She got me this cool beach
towel as a present. She’s got some pictures to show us at the party.
Man: OK.
Woman: Martin’s bringing some sandwiches and drinks. We can keep them
cold under the beach umbrella.
Man: That’s nice. Is Carla coming?
Woman: Yeah, she never misses a trip to the beach! She’s got some great
games on her tablet, so we can sit on the blanket and play them.
