Week 10

Lab Activity:-Nasopharyngeal and Oropharyngeal Swabbing

NASOPHARYNGEAL

 Measure visually* from the nostril's base to the auditory pit while using the
swab. To guarantee that it reaches the rear pharynx, divide the length in half
to determine how far it should be pushed into the nostril (about 5–6 cm in
adults).
 With the patient seated, tilt the head slightly backwards. Insert the swab into
the nostril parallel to the palate
 When there is a little resistance, continue inserting the swab into the nasal
cavity. Repeat in the second nostril with the same swab by rotating it and
applying a little push to extract a lot of mucosa.
 To prevent the swab from drying out, immediately place the NPS in the
UTM tube. Break/Cut the shaft's protruding end (the break point), then
firmly seal the tube. Use Parafilm to secure the cap to stop leaks while being
transported.
 Bring the sample to the lab and keep it there right away in the refrigerator
(2–8C). Use a thermos bag or box with 4-6 ice packs if the location is far
from a refrigerator.

OROPHARYNGEAL

 Place the patient in a relaxed position. The patient should open his mouth.
Hold the tongue down with a sterile tongue depressor while wearing gloves,
and ask the patient to utter "AAH" to raise the uvula.
 Swab the tonsillar fossa and posterior pharyngeal wall in a sweeping motion.
Do not wipe the soft palate. Never use the swab tip to contact the tongue.
 Put the Ops in the same UTM as the NPS right away. Close the tube firmly
after cutting off the shaft's protruding end.
 Secure the cap with Parafilm to prevent leakage during transport.
2.What are some preparations that you should do prior to nasopharyngeal and
oropharyngeal swabbing to protect yourselves from contracting COVID 19?

 It's crucial to note that the testing must be carried out in a designated space
with appropriate environmental sanitation to prevent the virus from
spreading by aerosolization. staff protection equipment (PPE), such as an
FFP2 (N95) mask (or higher level), a disposable cap, goggles, a gown, an
apron, latex gloves, and shoe coverings, must be used by the testing staff.

3.Give at least 3 nursing interventions that you can do prior to the procedure.

The actions a nurse takes to carry out their patient care plan, including any
treatments, procedures, or teaching opportunities designed to improve the
patient's comfort and health, are known as nursing interventions. The patient's bed
and position during sleep may need to be adjusted as one of these actions.

 Monitoring of vitals and recovery progress

 Feeding assistance
 Bedside care and assistance

4. Give at least 3 nursing interventions you should do after the procedure.

 Encourage rest and provide a quiet room

 Educate patient on a low salt diet, exercise, and healthy eating
 Educate the patient on the importance of taking antihypertensive medications
