3.1 Aim: To determination of calorific value of solid/liquid fuels using Bomb
Calorimeter. 3.2 Apparatus: Bomb, Water jacket, Offset stirrer, Calorimeter Vessel, Bomb firing unit, Pellet Pressure, Crucible, Ignite wire. 3.3 Introduction: The bomb calorimeter is a laboratory instrument used to measure the amount of a sample’s combustion heat or heat power when excess oxygen combustion occurs. A known amount of the samples is burnt in a sealed chamber. The air is replaced by pure oxygen. The sample is ignited electrically. As the samples burn, heat is produced. The rise in temperature is determined which enables the heat of combustion of samples. Procedure: • Take water of 1.9 liters in a water jacket and place it inside the bomb calorimeter container. • Measure 1 gm of given fuel on weighing machine and make pallet if the given fuel is a solid fuel. • Measured quantity of nichrome and cotton thread and measure the weight the both nichrome and cotton thread separately. • Tie the nichrome wire for the anode and cathode so that it holds firmly. • Take empty pestel and measure the weight. Tie up the pellets and hang it to the nichrome wire in such a way that the fuel should be in the pestol. • Keep the pestol in the bomb and fill the oxygen by connecting to the nipple. • Keep the bomb in side the water jacket and close the upper lit of the container and connect anode wire and cathode wire to the respective connections. • Green glow is seen in the bomb firing unit. Once the firing button is pressed firing of the fuel takes place. • Note down the temperature as indicated in temperature indicator. 1.1 Observation table
