Question 1
M: So, what did you do for your project ?
F: A couple of my friends decided to research the amazing dresses and hats from the late 1600s.
I nearly did the same, but then my teacher suggested that architecture would be a good topic
to explore – probably because she’s interested in it! I felt that the invention of things like the
telescope and the clock seemed more important, so that’s what I did in the end. There were so
many possible topics, it was hard to choose. Diet is another fascinating topic that I considered,
but I’ll do that for the next big history project.

Question 2
Wow! I really like the new laboratory – everything’s so clean and bright! It’s got everything, including
an interactive whiteboard and a massive TV screen so we can watch science videos. I was really hoping
we’d do a couple of experiments in this first lesson in the lab and get a chance to use some of the new
equipment. The teacher gave us a lecture instead and it took up most of the lesson, unfortunately.
And then to make things worse, she told us we have to do presentations next week!

Question 3
M: Are you coming to the library to study this afternoon?
F: I was thinking about it, but it’ll be full of students today and not as quiet as normal, so I’m
going home.
M: I can’t concentrate there unless I’ve got music playing in the background.
F: Maybe classical music can help, but what’s wrong with silence? I just need to be calm before I
study, so I often make myself a sandwich in the kitchen and then go jogging in the park round
the corner. It gets me in the right mood.
M: Oh, that’s interesting!

Question 4
F: I find it difficult to learn Spanish vocabulary. How about you?
M: Yeah, the methods that some people use don’t work for me. Using cards with pictures and words
on them seems childish somehow. The ideal way would be to use them in conversation with a real

Spanish person, but we don’t have regular opportunities. I prefer to read, especially magazines,
and it helps me to see the new words being used in context. That makes it really clear. It’s better
than just relying on an online dictionary all the time!

Question 5
Okay, when we get to the museum, we don’t need to pick up any leaflets as we’ve already looked at
the contents of one here at school. Walk round and take your own notes as you look at each dinosaur.
I think that way you’ll learn and remember more. We could hire a guide to explain the details or maybe
get one of those audio guides that we used on our visit to the science museum, but this time I want you
to decide for yourselves what information is important.

Question 6
F: Have you got art next?
M: Yes, we’re doing a big new painting this week. It’s a long process and we have to start by doing a
sketch, which is the stage I find most challenging actually – although anything’s better than having
to clean your brushes and your work area at the end of the class! To be honest, I enjoyed last term
more, because at least we went out to the park and tried to paint flowers and trees. I guess we
might do that again sometime soon.

Question 7
M: So, how’s your geography class going?
F: Well, we’re doing things in groups a lot this term and although I’m sitting with some girls who
aren’t my close friends, we’re getting the work done. It’s quite a challenging course and I find
the two textbooks we use a bit too advanced. But whenever there’s something I don’t understand,
the teacher sits down with me and explains things. It’s great that she does because otherwise I
couldn’t do the homework at all! Anyway, I’d better go and start work on my geography essay
now. Hope it won’t take too long!

Question 8
F: Have you decided what subject you’re going to do?
M: It’s difficult because all the options are interesting! I did cooking lessons last term, but I can’t do
it again, even though I’d like to. My friends recommended woodwork and said I could make some
beautiful things. I wasn’t sure about that. I’ve turned down guitar lessons because I’m already
having private lessons outside school. I’ve joined the nature studies class instead. It’s a chance
to go out into the countryside and I’ve heard the teacher is really inspiring.
