SEX EDUCATION TO THE STUDENTS OF CAMARINES SUR NATIONAL HIGH

INTRODUCTION

Filipino youth are facing health problems, particularly those in relation to their sexual and

reproductive health (SRH) and well being. A lot of young Filipinos are struggling to talk about

their sexual reproductive health (SRH) as well as some Filipinos not having good behavior when

it comes to the topic about sex. Because of a lack of knowledge when it comes to sex education.

One of the social issues here in the Philippines is Teenage Pregnancy. According to UNICEF the

Philippines is the second highest country of teenage pregnancy among ASEAN states. Also

according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) the rate of pregnancy among girls aged

10 to 14 increased from 11 percent or 1,903 births in 2016 to 2,113 registered births in 2020

stated in the study of Senator Sonny Angara of An Alarming increases in teenage pregnancies.

Amidst of Teenage pregnancy, Teenage pregnancy is not the only one social issue that

Philippines is facing when it comes to Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) of young

Filipinos. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases here in the Philippines is also increasing

And disturbing because according to the DOH report for the first three months of 2023, the DOH

recorded 4,819 HIV cases including 141 deaths.

In this light the researcher decided to conduct this study, because by providing comprehensive

sex education in Camarines Sur National High School, equips students with essential knowledge

and skills to make informed decisions regarding their Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH).
Leading to reduced rates of teenage pregnancies, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and

sexual risk-taking behaviors.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1.What is the perception of the students in Camarines Sur National High Schools about Sex

Education?

2.What are the possible impacts of implementing sex education to the adolescence of the

students of Camarines Sur National High School?

3.Why teens need comprehensive sex education?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study focuses on the benefits of implementing sex education to the students of Camarines

Sur National High School. The findings in this study may be beneficial to the following:

STUDENTS. The findings of this research will highlight the benefits of sex education for

students in Camarines Sur National High School. It will emphasize the importance of

comprehensive sexual health knowledge, skills, and attitudes in promoting healthy relationships,

informed decision making, and responsible sexual behavior. The study will provide students with

valuable information to enhance their understanding of sexuality, protect their well-being, and

navigate the challenges they may encounter in their personal lives.

EDUCATORS. The study will provide insights to educators at Camarines Sur National High

School on the positive impacts of implementing sex education. It will offer evidence-based
support for integrating comprehensive sex education into the curriculum and help educators

understand the importance of addressing sexual health needs. The research will guide educators

in developing effective teaching strategies, materials, and programs to deliver accurate and

age-appropriate information, ensuring that students receive quality sex education.

SOCIETY. The findings of this study have broader implications for society. By highlighting the

benefits of sex education, the research aims to contribute to the reduction of teenage pregnancies,

sexually transmitted infections, and sexual risk-taking behaviors in the community. By equipping

students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to sexual health, sex education can promote

healthier relationships, improve overall well-being, and foster a culture of consent, respect, and

responsibility. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to the development, and sexually healthy

society.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This research serves as a foundation for future studies on sex

education. It provides a starting point for researchers interested in exploring similar topics or

expanding the research to other educational institutions or regions. The study’s findings,

limitations, and methodology can guide future researchers in designing their studies, identifying

research gaps, and building upon the existing knowledge base. The research contributes to the

collective understanding of the benefits of sex education and encourages further investigation

into the effectiveness and implementation of comprehensive sexual health programs.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study intends to determine the benefits of implementing sex education to the students of

Camarines Sur National High School in the school year 2023-2024. As the primary respondents,

the study will respond to relevant research questions. This study will assist them examine the
positive outcomes and advantages that arise from providing comprehensive sex education within

the school’s curriculum. This research will be conducted from the school year 2023 to 2024. This

research is limited to the students of Camarines Sur National High School.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This research aims to determine the advantages of implementing sex education to the students of

Camarines Sur National High School (CSNHS) for the academic year 2023-2024. To explain the

analysis, the following research theories can provide guidance:

Symbolic Interactionism Theory

Symbolic Interactionism is a perspective on the social world which focuses on

interaction as the unit of the study such as behavior and perspective by interactionism. By

implementing comprehensive sex education in Camarines Sur National High School, This theory

can determine the perception of the students about sex education by observation.

Social Learning Theory

This theory posits that individuals acquire knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors through

observation and modeling. In the context of comprehensive sex education, students at Camarines

Sur National High School can learn about healthy relationships, consent, and safe sexual

practices by observing and modeling the behaviors taught in the curriculum. By implementing

comprehensive sex education, the school aims to positively influence students’ attitudes and

behaviors towards sexual health.

 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Here are the definitions of some terms related to the topic “ Determining the Advantages of

Implementing Sex Education to the students of Camarines Sur National High School S/Y

2023-2024”

1.Teenage Pregnancy - When a woman gets pregnant under the age of 20. It usually refers to

teens between the ages of 15-19. But it also includes the age of 10.

2. Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) - It serves as the central statistical authority of the

Philippine government on primary data collection and publishes statistical information of

economic, demographic, and political affairs.

3. Comprehensive Sex Education - Is a curriculum-based process of teaching and learning

about the cognitive, emotional, physical and social aspects of sexuality.

4.Sexual Reproduction Health (SRH) - It provides medical care and comprehensive sexuality

education, as well as information on how to prevent sexually transmitted infections and

unintended pregnancy.

5. Camarines Sur National High School - It is also called CamHi, It is a public school located

in Naga City. It is the oldest school in Camarines Sur and one of the biggest public secondary

schools in Bicol Region.

6. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) - It refers to a condition in which progressive failure

of the immune system allows life threatening opportunistic infections and cancers.
