ABSTRACT

The operation of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) requires energy and material inputs and
produces emissions that impact the environment and life cycle assessment (LCA) quantifies
such impacts. This study aims to measure the potential environmental impacts resulting from
the operation of a WWTP unit at the Segara Village Hotel, Bali. The potential impacts were
extracted from the WWTP operational data and analyzed using openLCA v1.11.0 software,
ecoinvent 3.8 database, and CML-IA baseline method. This study revealed main impacts arising
from the production of 1 m3 of treated wastewater were global warming potential of 0.55716 kg
CO2-eq, acidification potential of 0.00310 kg SO2-eq, eutrophication potential of 0.00126 kg
PO4-eq, abiotic depletion potential of 1.62 × 10-2 kg Sb-eq (nonfossil) and 544,163 MJ (fossil),
freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity potential of 0.25265 kg 1,4-DB-eq, human toxicity potential of
0.24727 kg 1,4-DB-eq, ozone layer depletion potential of 3.14 × 10-4 kg CFC-11 eq,
photochemical oxidation potential of 0.00011 kg C2H4-eq. All impacts were contributed by
electricity usage. This study highlights the environmental impacts of a WWTP operation in
Indonesian tourism sector.
