8 OF COINS
The graphic symbol of the 8 of Coins presents two equal squares, having a
common centre and that we must imagine spinning, as if around an axis, in
opposite directions. These squares symbolise the active elements of the
process of the Creator who, in the human being, acts so much from outside
to inside as well as inside out.
These elements, in the East are called "Tatwas" and, in Western esotericism
- essential and substantive elements of everything that exists. They are
elements of the Universal Creative Force that has two aspects: "the one who
creates" and "what is created". The Biblical Elohim and all that was created
by them represent these two aspects, that is, the essential (creator) and the
substantial (created).
The human being is unaware of the external tactical forces that they create.
It is conscious, when the forces are those which he himself creates,
according to his will.
In humans, in general, only the four lower tatwas - "Prithivi", "Apas", "Vayu"
and "Tejas" - are manifested, and each side of the squares corresponds to
one of those tatwas. The common axis of the two squares represents the fifth
tatwa, "Akasha", which links the lower four tatwas to the two superiors:
"Adi" and "Anupadaka", not manifested in the human being. Tatwa Akasha
manifests itself, sometimes partially.
Tatwa Akasha conveys the two aspects of his/her force to the human being,
through the four lower tatwas. Akasha’s influence, acting through the
Prithíví tatwa, governs the organic, natural growth of each physical
organism, from birth to adulthood and also causes the complete renewal of
your cells every seven years.
Acting through the Apas tatwa, Akasha governs development of the etheric
body; through tatwa Vayu, the astral body and through Tejas - the mental
body, that is, intellectual capacities. In every normal human organism, these
four tatwas are active. It is necessary to underline that, of those four, the
lower two - Prithivi and Apas – are the beginning of the substance, while the
two superiors - Vayu and Tejas - remain in a state of force.
The tatwas are the seven aspects of the Universal Creative Force - the seven
planes of the creation - from the highest to the lower, the physical. The
complete work of the seven tatwas, takes place only in the Macrocosm; in
the human microcosm, in general, only the lower four tatwas are
manifested.
Both the tatwas and the planets are the Seven Secondary Causes of the
World and the relationship between these two complexes of forces can be
compared to the relationship between the content and the mould that
shapes that content. Tatwas create, planets shape what is created.
The unique and inimitable essence of each individuality is created by
Akasha. The shape is given to that individuality by the dominant planet. The
strength and the development of individuality depends upon the degree of
Akasha's manifestation in humans. In the same way as in the case of the
manifestation of Individuality through the planetary complex, the more
developed the four lower tatwas in humans and more harmonious the
cooperation between them, the easier and broader will be conditions for
Akasha’s manifestation.
Manifesting itself in a pronounced way, the Akasha tatwa can act directly on
the content of the personality, even to "implant the seeds of the Spirit in it"
and serve as a conductor for the upper tatwas.
The direct action of the Akasha manifests itself as a general spiritualization
of the personality, starting with physical and ethereal bodies, guiding the
development of hidden psychic forces, intuition and expansion of
consciousness. Unlike what is normal, such a development, although there
is no conscious awareness of the person in question, could be called occult
and esoteric. It is the internal work of the Spirit that cannot be provoked,
nor accelerated, nor routed in one or another determined direction. It can
only be verified with gratitude and whilst trying not to hinder the process
due to some internal disharmony.
Tatwas, by themselves, just like planets, are neither positive nor negative,
but the tactical force changes in an unharmonious or distorted way when
there is disharmony in the personality. Tradition teaches that upper tatwas
can manifest even as destructive force if the lower tatwas - that is, the
personality –not being harmonised, resist higher vibrations. This is usually
expressed as a total loss of control over desires and emotions, revolt against
any authority and accepted forms in the environment, as well as by
destructive impulses. However, this spirit of denial and destruction is not
caused by the aspiration to create something new and better, which
characterises the Swords experience; The intent is to deny and destroy. On
the other hand, it is not a problem of primitive vandalism, a problem of
stupidity, but of a revolt against the imperfection of life forms and against
your own inability to change something.
Pausing in this matter, we want one more time to highlight the absolute
need for purification and harmonisation of the personality before any other
spiritual work.
The simultaneous rotation of the two squares of the symbol of the 8 of
Coins, in opposite directions, symbolises the two aspects of creative process:
1: The "involutive", that is, the immersion of the subtle in the dense or the
"that which creates us" aspect.
2: The evolutionary, when we consciously make the more subtle dense, that
is, when "we create ourselves".
It is important that the disciple is aware of the existence of these two
aspects of the process and their interdependence.
Let’s look at this second and very important aspect, that is, the conscious
and creative work of the disciple, which in the 8th degree of Coins is related
to the tatwas. The work of tatwas is a little different, as it does not consist of
"purification", as was the case with the planets, but in reinforcement, that
is, to raise their vibrations, because each tatwa has a full range of
vibrations. It is possible, for example, to make subtle the physical body in
such a way (a substantial aspect of tatwa Prithivi) that this, by itself, will
activate the subtlety of the psychic content, thus increasing the superior
receptivity. This is the explanation of the esoteric value of fasting.
One can consciously work to develop the personal magnetism (substantial
aspect of the Apas tatwa) or to sublimate the psychic and mental elements
(tatwa Vayu and Tejas); (see annex to the exercises and special regimes). The
disciple needs to be aware of the degree of development of their tatwas, in
order to raise their vibrations.
To achieve harmonious development and balance between mental power and
the ability to feel deeply, the two planes - the mental and the astral - must
be simultaneously developed areas. Likewise, they need to be
simultaneously developed from the two lower - the etheric and the physical -
so that their vibrations are not only not specious, but even facilitate the
subtlety of the elements of the superior personality.
All the disciple's previous work on himself was an indispensable preparation
to be able to consciously raise the vibrations of their essential elements
(mental and astral) and substantial (etheric and physical). The action of the
four lower tatwas can be twisted through personal, conscious work and
appropriate exercise. The action of the 5th tatwa - the Akasha - the spiritual
principle, cannot be twisted by the disciple's own effort, but it is possible to
create conditions for the same to manifest with more intensity. The Akasha
tatwa manifests itself in several ways:
The 8th grade of Coins concludes the esoteric teaching about individuality
which is also often called "the real me" and that is always more pronounced
as the disciple advances on the initiatic path
The 8th grade of Coins also includes teaching about the three types of souls,
named after three letters of the Hebrew alphabet - Aleph, Ghimel and Lamed
- and that together form the divine name AGLA. The numerical value of this
word is 1 + 3 + 30 + 1 = 35, which, by adding the figures, gives the number
8 (see the 8th Major Arcanum). These three types of souls correspond to
three different paths towards God:
