WORLD LEFT HANDERS DAY

‘’If the left half of the brain controls the right half of the body then left-handed people
are in the right side of the mind’’- W.C. Fields

What Is World Left Handers day?

International Left-Handers Day is an international day observed annually on Augu

st 13 to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of left-handed individuals. The
day was first observed in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell, founder of Lefthanders Inte
rnational, Inc.

What makes a left-handed person special?

In left-handed people, both sides of the brain tend to communicate more effective
ly. This means that left-handed people may have superior language and verbal a
bility.
Left-handed people tend to have faster connections between the right and left he
mispheres of the brain, which leads to quicker information processing.
roughly 10% of the world population is left-handed.

How Rare Are Lefties?

Right-handed people dominate the world, and it’s been that way since the Sto
ne Age. How do we know? Researchers figured it out by measuring the arm b
ones in ancient skeletons and by examining wear patterns in prehistoric tools.
In Western countries, lefties make up only about 10% of the population. Folks
who favor different hands for different tasks (mixed-handed) or who use both h
ands with equal skill (ambidextrous) are uncommon.

Brain Disorders

There’s a well-established link between left-handedness and mental condition

s like schizophrenia, which can cause hallucinations and impaired thinking. A l
arge recent study in the U.K. found a strong link between regions of the brain i
nvolved in handedness and how likely you are to have mood swings, restlessn
ess, and neuroticism, a personality type marked by anxiety and fear that some
times can veer into mental disorder.

Health Risks

Left-handed people are more prone to diseases like dyslexia and ADHD.
Right-handed people are not prone to any disease due to their handedness.

Genetics

Left-handed parents are more likely to have left-handed children.

Right-handed parents don’t have much influence on the handedness of their child
ren.

Brain Lateralization

Left-handed people show less brain lateralization.

Right-handed people show more brain lateralization.

WORLD LEFT HANDERS DAY

Every year on the 13th of August, people around the world observe Internat
ional Left Handers Day to honor and the distinctiveness and peculiarities of
those who are left-handed. The day was originally celebrated in 1976 by De
an R. Campbell. Notably, left-handedness is said to be more common amon
g men than among women.
Among the notable lefties are Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra M
odi, former US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, Prince William, M
other Teresa, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actors Amitabh Bachchan and Ra
jinikanth, and industrialist Ratan Tata.

Scientist Sir Isaac Newton, painter Pablo Picasso, French leader Napoleon
Bonaparte, and media personality Oprah Winfrey are also left-handed.
Both sides of the brain often communicate more successfully in left-hande
d people. This suggests that left-handed individuals may have stronger ling
uistic and language skills.
People who are left-handed typically have faster connections between the ri
ght and left hemispheres of the brain, which speeds up the processing of in
formation. In a study, the brain activity of left-handed participants was obse
rved. People who are left-handed have been found to have superior left-righ
t brain connectivity, particularly in regions involved in language use.

Chris McManus, professor of psychology and medical education at Universi

ty College London and author of Right Hand, Left Hand, stated that if you ar
e left-handed, you may discover that your brain is organized in a little odd
way, which suddenly grants you abilities that other people lack.
In the world, 10% of people are left-handed.

An interesting fact is that people that are left-handed have historically been
charged with crimes and having connections to the devil. But in recent year
s, that stigma has virtually vanished.
