Indigenous architecture

Traditional Architecture is a type of Architecture that is based on the way of life and principles
of a group of people or culture during a particular time period
Traditional architecture can vary depending on the region.
Igbo Tribe
This is a style of architecture that is unique among the Igbo people. It involves the use of locally
found materials within the region.
The types of houses includes mud, huts and thatched roofs. They have open spaces as
courtyards and shrines back in the days.
The Igbo architecture shows the cultural
heritage of the Igbo people and their deep
connection to their environment.
In recent times, they’ve adopted the use of
concrete and iron sheets and other modern
building materials.

Common materials used in building are mud, thatch for


Roofs, Timber.
Most of the houses were circular in shape.
A typical Igbo compound consists of huts belonging to

head in the centre.
Other huts are built for the rest of the family then
there’s a bran and a shrine at the back.
The Igbo people also used motifs and symbols as a form
of decoration on the huts. These decorations often
portray social status and identity

Chinese people
Chinese architecture is a style of architecture that has been developed over thousands of years
in china. The ancient Chinese architecture began in the Neolithic era, there were only two kinds
of buildings: circular buildings with a conical roof and square buildings with a pyramidal roof.
They are well known for their elaborate and pyramidal roofs
that are made of ceramic tiles and bamboo.
The choice of materials used during these times was
Dependent on the climate, the availability of resources and
the purpose of the building.
The small private homes of the ancient Chinese were usually
built from dried mud, rough stones, and wood. While that
of the rich were mostly story building made of ceramic tiled
roofs, intricate wood carvings and decorative brackets.
. Since China is in the Northern Hemisphere, most ancient
Chinese architectural structures faced southwards for
warmth and light.

The Forbidden City
This covers an area of 720,000 square meters and is the largest palace in the world.
Inside the Forbidden city, there are over 980 buildings, including palaces pavilions and gardens.
with over 8000 rooms.
Temple Of Heaven

This was constructed in the 15th century.


It covers an area of 2.7 million square meters and is divided into three main groups of buildings.
1. The hall of prayer
2. The imperial vault
3. The circular mound altar
