Sections TI and 111 of this manual contain over- havi and test instructions for the Fixed Piteh Propeller Assemblies manufactured by McCauley Industrial Corporation, Dayton, Ohio 45417, 1-2, Section IV contains blade dimension and angle data, repair limits and parts lists for the propellers covered by this Manual, 1-3. The propellers of this model series are manu- faclured of one-piece anodized aluminum alloy, and have a fixed piteh, 1-4. For identification the bub of each propeller ts stamped with ils complete model number, serial number, Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) type cer {ificate ‘number, production certification number, and the number of times the propeller has boen recon Gitloned. (See figure 2-14.) The complete model number is 2 combination of the basic model number and suffix numbers to indicate the propeller diameter and piteh, An explanation of the complete model number is as follows: Basic model number iBOO/EM 71 44 “To Inches piteh at 0.75 radius, L Propeller diameter, inches. One to four lettors indicating type of crankshaft on which propeller is installed, blade tip contour, use of adapter, or other informa tion pertaining to a specific air- craft inslallation, Basie design number (planform, ete.) 1-5, Consult the FAA TC Data Sheet for details relating to the installation of Fixed Piteh propellers covered in this Manual, If such detals are not available in the TC Data Sheet, inquire of McCauley Industrial Corporation, For convenience of the user, ‘a Propeller Installation List, prepared by McCauley, is (may be) found in Seetion VI. 1-6, Table 1-1 ts an alpha-numerleal listing of propellers covered in thie Manual, The Table is fan index for the figures and tables of Section IV. 1-7, DEFINITIONS OF PROPELLER SERVICING, 1-8. OVERHAUL, This term denotes a complete teardown and reassembly which is not necessarily applicable to a fixed pitch propeller, The terms “overhaul” and “reconditioning” are synonomous for a fixed piteh propeller. 1-9, RECONDITIONING, ‘The repair of major or minor Blade damage caused by erosion or striking small ‘objects during normal operation, ‘The propeller shall be penetrant inspected, refinished, and rebalanced, Reconditioning is accomplished on an irregular basis a8 necessary and required. 1-10. REPAIR, ‘The correction, on an irregular basis as necessary, of minor or major damage eaused by a physical mishap, The amount, degree and extent of damage determines whether or not the propeller can be repaired without refinishing. If a propeller is bent or twisted, the repair is major and recondi~ tioning must be accomplished, 1-11, FREQUENCY OF OVERHAUL, There is no Fecommended overhaul period for fixed pitch pro- pellers, They shall bo reconditioned or repaired as required for blade surface conditions. The propeller mounting bolt torque should be checked fat least once a year, Propeller mounting bolts ‘should be penetrant inspected whenever the propeller. is removed from the engine for reconditioning or repair. v4 Table 1-1 FIX) 130720 Overhaul ED PITCH PROPELLERS Propeller Section TV Data Location Propeller Section TV Data Location Basie Model Basie Model Number Figures, ‘Tables ‘amber Figures Tables + 4 4 ‘4 1890 /CF 16, 17, 18 22, 23, 24 1890 /OM cn BoM 16, 17, 1 22, 23, 24 FCM 1A100/ACM 423 43,4 uM mem 7 1B175/MFC 10, 11, 12 13, 4, 16 1ato1/ocm ccm 429 43,4 13B200/H1M 13, 14, 15 17, 19, 20 eM 15238/BFA | 19, 20, 21 25, 26, 27 1A102/0CM 12,3 1,3, 4, DFC 1A105/8CM * SCM 4,56 67,8 Baler 8LM pum | 16, 1, 18 22, 23, 24 LF 1A135/BRM LM acm 1,23 23,5 xem sciso/eTm | 22, 23, 24 28, 90, 31 RM EGM sArt0/CFA sc172/aGm DF BTM DM EM BFA 78,8 9, 10, 11 a Gig Mra | 22, 23, 24 28, 30, 32, i MoM 33 EL MTM JAYTS/ATM SBM DM T™ rc 7 aie Gite 1¢200/Fe 33, 14, 15 17, 19, 20 GMA 1D200/0m 13, 14, 15 18, 19, 21 SFA : sp2as/ara | 19, 20, 21 25, 26, 27 ee PFA 18200/AOM DFA FA 13, 14, 15 11, 19, 20 FM 12 poco ‘130720 Overhawl SECTION 1 ~ OVERHAUL INSTRUCTIONS 2.41. Remove heavy and tighily adhering deposits with a soft bristle brush, Do not use a steel, other metal, or hard bristle brush, or a tool of any type to remove deposits, 2-3. After cleaning allow parts to alr dry, or use a gentle stream of clean, dry compressed air toremove excess mixture. 2-4, Protect parts from collecting dust and dirt during. storage and handling for overhaul, Its recommended that the small parts be kept in transparent plastic ngs. 2.5, DISASSEMBLY. 2-6, DOWEL AND SPACER REMOVAL, Dowels must he ‘removed from propeller hubs and spacers to permit penetrant and magnetic particle inspections, Remove the dovels in the following manner: 2-7, Dowels from Hub. When the propeller hub Contains only 2 dowels (no spacer), proceed as follows: a. Support hub, with dowels down, on parallels on the base of an arbor press so that there is suffietent space for the dowel, b. Insert a rod of the proper diameter and length in the through hole of hub to contact dowel, c. Using the ram of arbor press, force dowel ‘out of ib. 4. Repent steps b and ¢ for second dowel, fe. When dowels are installed in blindholes, remove in the following manner: 1, For dowels that have internal threads, clamp propelier hub in smooth-jaw vise so that dowels are accessible, 2. Install threaded end of pin remover, PN D: 3925, In dowel hand Light (see figure 2-1), Pin remover mustalways beheld with its center- Line in Tine with that of dowel, Hold weight firmly so that pin remover does not slip from hands when dowel comes loose, 3. Grasp cylindrical weight on pin remover and hammer against nut to extract dowel, ‘The use of pliers (o remove the hardened steel dowels from the softer aluminum hub could result in elongation or other damage to hub holes, Such damage coutd not be repairedand propeller would have to be serapped, 4, For dowels that do not have internal threads, proceed as follows: (a) Form a bar tool by center- 730720 Overhaul fe, If spacer has shouldered dowels installed in the rear face, remove these first as in step e, para 2-1, then remove the other dowels as inpara d above. 2.9, INSPECTION. 2-10, DEFIN ITION OF DEFECTS, Types of damage ‘and defects which may be observed on parts of this assembly are defined as follows: Burr - Corrosion ~ Crack = cut = Dent Erosion - Fretting = Gouge - Inclusion - Nick - A small, thin section of metal extending beyond a regular surface, usually located ata corner or on the edge of a bore or hole, Loss of metal from the surface by ‘chemical or electrochemical action, The corrosion products generally are easily removed by mechanical means. Iron rust Is an example of corrosion, A physical separation of two adjacent portions of metal, evidenced by a fine or thin line across the surface, caused by excessive stress at that-point, It may extend inward from the surface from a few thousandths inch to completely through the section thickness. Loss of metal, usually to an appreciable depth over a relatively long and narrow area, by mechanical means, as would ‘cecur with the use of a saw blade, chisel or sharp-edge stone striking 2 glancing Blow, Indentation in a metal surface produced by an object striking with force, The surface surrounding the indentation will usually be slightly upset. Loss of metal from the surface by mechanical action of foreign objects, such as grit or fine sand, ‘The eroded, area will be rough and may be lined in the direction in which the foreign ma- terial moved relative to the surface. Breakdown or deterforation of metat surface by vibratory or “chattering” action, Usually no loss of metal or ‘cracking of surface but generally showing similar appearance, Grooves in, oF breakdown of, motal surface from contact of foreign material under heavy pressure, Usually indicates metal loss but may be largely displace~ ‘ment of material, Presence of foreign or extraneous ma terial wholly within a portion of metal. Such material is introduced during the manufacture of rod, bar on tubing by rolling or forging. Local break or notch on edge. Usually displacement of metal rather than loss. Pitting ~ Serateh = Score ~ Stain ~ Upsetting - 2-11, DEFINITION OF MEASUREMENTS, Sharp, localized breakdown (small, deep cavity) of metal surface, usually with defined edges, Slight tear or break in metal surface from light, momentary contact by foreign material, Deeper (than serateh) tear or break fn metal surface from contact under pres- sure, May show discoloration (rom tem- perature produced by friction. A change in color, locally, causing a noticeable different appearance from the surrounding area, A displacement of material beyond the normal contour or surface (a local bulge or bump). “Usually indicates no metal loss, Proper inspection of propellers includes the measurement of width, thickness, edge and face alignment, and blade angles of both ‘blades at several stations, ‘These measurements are defined as follows (see figure 2-2): Blade Angle ~ Camber Side (Chord Line = ‘An angle (less than 90°) between the chord line of a propeller blade section and a plane perpendicular to the axis of propeller rotation. = Curved side of propeller blade over which air moves at reduced pressure to create thrust when propeller 15, rotated. A straight line drawn between the leading and trailing edges of the blade, Edge Alignment ~ Distance from blade centerline to leading edge, slong chord line, Face Alignment - Distance from blade centerline to Face Side = Piteb - highest point on face side perpendi- cular to chord line. Flat, or vory slightly curved, sideof propeller blade against which the relatively higher pressure acts to produce thrust when propeller is rotated, For purposes of this manual, the term “piteh* refers to propeller geometric pitch of the blade section at approximately 8/4 of the radius. ‘This ts the theoretical distance that the propeller element (station) would, move forward if it were moving along a helix with an angle equal to the blade section angle. Propeller (blade) The locus of the centers of gravity Centerline Station Line - of blade sections from the bub (center of engine crankshaft) to the tip. Ay babble ‘or blade protractor to ‘measure blade angles, Bending Toole - Sultable tools with which to bend damaged blades to. regain proper dimonsions refer’ to paras 2-20 Figure 24. Checking Angle, Face and and 2-22; see figure 2-6 and 2-8) Edge Alignment 24 ‘730720 Overhaut 2-18, Visually inspect all parts for damage or defects defined in paragraph 2-10, Check that surface finish (anodizing or plating) is not broken, chipped or peeled (if peeled, look for corrosion). " Staining and slight surface markings (not perceptible to finger~ nail) are normal and not alone cause for rejection or replacement, NOTE Spacers and dowels must be removed before penetrant inspection of propeller (refer to para 2-6), 2014, Inspect aluminum blades and spacers by use of the penetrant inspection method, Military Speci ‘ation MIL-1-6865, ‘The Nucrescent method, * Zyglow" (Magnaflux Corp., Chicago, Ill), is acceptable; how- ever, a non-fluorescent method, “Dy-check" (Turco Products Co,, Los Angeles, Calif), Is preferred, Parts shall not be heated ‘above 150°F (60°C) for enotrant inepection, NOTE Pay particular attention to the loading edge half of the face (fist) sides from tip to 12 inches inboard of tip which are the most critical areas, Carefully examine propeller blades for bends, cracks, cuts, scratches, dents, erosion, gouges, nicks and pitting. &. Inspect all steel parts by magnetic particle process, Specification MIL-1-6868, 2-15.
