RHINO S and E Series

Flatbed hot foil embossing & holograms

RHINO brings ultimate refining versatility into your printing press.

The system allows cost effective in-line embellishment of labels with a superior quality for single
pass production.

RHINO S Series are designed for in-line integration into fast nar-
row web printing presses for PSL and cardboard for single pass
production.
RHINO E Series are designed to go typically into digital finishing
lines for efficient, high quality refining and quick set up and
change over time.

Integrated into continuous motion web stream, the in-/out-feed

nips grant jerk-free intermittent motion without interfering to the
press. RHINO follows the master encoder signal of the press. A
printed mark on the web is referenced to register to the incoming
printed web.

Key Benefits
High quality embellishment plays an important role for the perception of your customer´s prod-
uct/brand. The RHINO allows you to offer your customers such high quality embellishment with
multi-foiling and/or embossing effects as well as in-setting of holograms or lenses in register for
special optical effects. These added values can be applied with a minimum of additional cost
thanks to the high productivity of the RHINO and its outstanding features helping you to save mate-
rial costs.

• Optimal stamping area size

• High Productivity thanks to high stroke frequency for high web speed:
o RHINO E: 18’000 strokes/hour for web speed up to 85 m/min
o RHINO S: 30’000 strokes/hour for web speed up to 150 m/min

• Tool heating with optimal heat flow and individually controlled heating zones
When running fast, sourcing the tool with heat energy becomes crucial.
The sophisticated engineering of RHINO ensures sufficient heat energy transfer to the tip of the
tooling plate at very high stroking frequencies.
Individually controllable heating zones add maximum flexibility for the heat management on de-
manding multi-step designs.

General Description
The high stroke frequency allows you to embellish labels without slowing down the speed of your
printing press. The combination of high pressure and long dwell time ensures long impact time
giving sufficient heat energy transfer to the tip of the tooling plate even at very high stroke frequen-
cies. Therefore RHINO gives you unmatched embellishment quality and allows you to process all
materials - even open uncoated paper.
RHINO can start while the press is running. No stopping of the press required to start RHINO.
Integrated into continuous motion web stream, the in-/out-feed nips grant jerk-free intermittent mo-
tion without interfering to the press. RHINO follows the master encoder signal of the press. A
printed mark on the web is referenced to register to the incoming printed web.

The hot foil head can be turned easily and quickly in web direction or across the web. One wide
or several numbers of narrow foil streams may be set up depending on the label design. With the
revolving head, the foil saving can be optimized based on the design.

RHINO can be configured with one or two foil stepping patterns to optimize the foil saving po-
tential. It allows 2, 3 or 4 step stamping of different color foils, 3D relief or micro-embossing ef-
fects in a single-pass, using one single tool.

RHINO can apply holograms, optical lenses or prestigious patches in register. This allows to
create unique designs by combining foiling, micro-embossing and optical effects efficiently. In addi-
tion, you can offer your customer brand security.

RHINO uses a fixed top plate and a very rigid movable table allowing high crisp embossing relief
– a design features highly appreciated by brand owners. The stroke of the movable table is adjust-
able ensuring repeatable control of the embossing height and the stamping pressure.

The tool cassette allows lateral and skew adjustment during the run to register the stamp to the
preprinted design.
The Pantec referencing system allows tool setup outside of the machine. No cutting of the web
is necessary for changing the cassette. Both, upper and lower parts of the cassette are precisely
referenced to the machine automatically. Tool Referencing and Shimming Plates will reduce the
set-up time for repeat jobs to a minimum.

Max web width only when the web runs centered and stable and side register max. offset and skew 0° or skew max. and no side register correction.
III See graph in the above description section for achievable web speed in function of substrate advance. The web speed may be limited by the substrate and foil
type, the embossing area size, the base material of the tool etc.
IV The specification is indicative. For binding specifications, tests with customer designs are required to build the base for contractual specifications.
The specification assumes stable, non-drifting distance between register marks.
Especially in offline applications with pre-printed materials, e.g. as a result of unsuitable winding tension, stretchable materials may show drifting distance

RHINO_System description_EN_10.05 10 of 11
between register marks. The specification includes slight drift of incoming distance between register marks. If the measured average distance between print
marks does not drift more than 0.02 o/oo (which corresponds to max.: +-0.01 mm within 1.0 m web length) the indicated tolerance remains valid, normally.
RHINO measures the average distance between print marks. If the web tension drift is higher and unidirectional, then manual register adjustments may be re-
quired.
With pre-printed substrates Pantec requires pre-sales tests to validate the substrate and resulting register tolerance specifications.
Above assumption for potential drift of the distance between register marks, applies to in-line applications as well.
V Thinner tools possible with adapter plate
VI The specifications are indicative. For binding specifications, tests with customer foil and design are required to build the base for contractual specifications.
The foil must be slightly shorter than the distance between patches on the printed web. The distance between label lanes shall be adjusted to be higher by the
factor +6..10 ‰ . By slightly stretching the foil, with the RHINO servo foil extension control, the leftmost and the rightmost patch can both be adjusted to the
proper position on the printed web.
VII static charges may occur at lower humidity and may influence the performance, substrate and foil registration.
VIII For non-basement installations, check with your civil engineer.
