Assessment in Learning 2
BSEd Social Studies 2-1

Why authentic assessment is salient for you?

Authentic assessment is the type of assessment that focuses on the students’

knowledge and performance in a real-life situation. It is an assessment that helps

students apply their knowledge and skills in the real world, not only in the four

corners of a classroom. To begin, the significance of this assessment is that it

assists students in applying their acquired knowledge in real-life situations.

Traditional assessments only test the student's intelligence about concepts and are

limited to multiple choice or memorization, but authentic assessment demonstrates

their knowledge about the practical world. In addition, Authentic assessment allows

the student to take part in or engage in their learning and become motivated and

engage more in learning because they were able to connect their knowledge and

abilities in the real-life situation, moreover, it helps the student have a sense of

accomplishment because they are coping with the challenges, and a sense of pride

because authentic assessment helps the student feel the success in their life.

Authentic assessment improves the critical thinking skills of the student. When the

teacher asks the student to apply solutions to a certain problem, the student needs

to use higher-order thinking skills like analysis, synthesis, and evaluation to solve the

problem. As a future teacher, it will provide me with information about my students;

when I try to give them a certain problem, it will guide me to observe the problem-

solving technique, communication skills, and teamwork of my students. This

information will help me identify the area where students struggle and help them

cope with it by giving them feedback.
