Abstract Title:
Enhancing Safety and Reliability in Hydrogen Transportation

Abstract Text:
The escalating global energy demand has needed a significant reduction in our dependence on
conventional fossil fuels, primarily due to their substantial contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
Hydrogen, has witnessed a significant rise in its utilization across diverse industrial sectors,
including petroleum refineries, fuel cells, and power plants. It is increasingly recognized as a
promising alternative energy carrier. Green hydrogen, for example, is produced through water
electrolysis, a process in which water molecules are split into hydrogen and oxygen by applying a
direct current. This current flows between two connected electrodes immersed in water. Regardless
its many advantages, the transportation of hydrogen poses a significant challenge. To enhance
cost-effectiveness and improve the competitiveness of fuel cell electric vehicles, high-pressure
pipelines have been explored as a means to deliver hydrogen to fueling stations. However, the safety
and reliability of uncoated or inadequately coated pipelines become critical concerns. Hydrogen
embrittlement, a phenomenon in which pipeline steels lose their ductility, fracture toughness, and
resistance to fatigue, represents a potential risk associated with hydrogen transportation. In this
context, the testing and evaluation of coatings for hydrogen gas pipelines have gained attention as a
crucial field, aiming to ensure the safe transportation of hydrogen gas. While the development of
new testing methods in this area is an ongoing process, current methodologies for bare metals offer
valuable insights into coating protection. By evaluating the effectiveness of coatings, these methods
aid in minimizing safety hazards and ensuring the integrity of hydrogen pipelines.
