 Synopsis
The story is basically about a poor and miserable child who turns out to be an angel for
Thompson family. A poor woman who is hated throughout her life by almost all the villager. She
dies in a drunken state, leaving her three children behind. The village people take pity on these
children. The boy was taken in by a farmer and Katy is taken away by Mrs. Ellis. The youngest
Maggie, who is disabled and bedridden, is left alone because nobody want to take care of her.

Mr Thompson, the wheelwright, decides to take her home so that he can take her to the poor
house the next day as he knows his wife would not like Maggie to stay at home forever with
them. Joe begs her to tolerate with Maggie for a single day. He asks her to speak to her gently.
When Joe goes out for work, Mrs. Thompson is all alone with Maggie the whole day, her attiude
towards Maggie changes and slowly she becomes fond of her. Mr. Thompson notices this
change and realizes that it has been dark and empty in his bhouse for a long time because his
wife had nothing to love and care for, which was the reason for her being irritable and ill-
tempered.

Now the sweetness of that sick child bring the happiness and love to the Thompson's family.
Three of them live together as a family. Maggie is an angel in the house disguised as a sick
and helpless child.
 THEME

The Evils of Drunkenness

ONE IMPORTANT ISSUE RAISED AS THE KEY THEMES IN THIS STORY IS THE
SORROW AND SOCIAL BURDEN CREATED BY DRUNKENNESS AS A HUGE NUMBER
OF MEN WHO NEGLECTED THE NEEDS OF THEIR FAMILIES IN FAVOR OF DRINKING
IN BARS. SIMILARLY, IN "AN ANGEL IN DISGUISE", THIS THEME TAKES PERHAPS
A MORE TWISTED TURN, AS THE MOTHER IS THE ONE FALLING PREY TO THE
CHARMS OF DRINK, LEAVING HER THREE CHILDREN HOME ALONE AND
NEGLECTED.

Compassion
THE SECOND THEME MIGHT APPEAR DISTANT FROM THIS STORY SINCE IT IS RELATED
TO THE COMPASSION FROM THE NEIGHBOURS FOR THE THREE INNOCENT CHILDREN. A
MODERN-READER MAY THINK THAT THE NEIGHBOUR MUST BE A COLD-HEARTED
PERSON AS THEY ONLY TAKE OLDER CHILDREN TO PROVIDE AN EXTRA FARM HAND.
REMEMBER, THOUGH, THAT THESE WERE DIFFERENT TIMES; PERHAPS THE NEIGHBOURS
DID FEEL COMPASSION, WERE TOO POOR AND OVER-WORKED TO MAKE DECISIONS
BASED ON THAT COMPASSION.

The moment when Mr. Thompson brought
Maggie to his house because no one want to take
her.

VILLAGE
The events of the story happen in the village, where
every man or woman knows each other. The setting
of the events is presented in a general way. The
author doesn't describe the place, but we can
imagine this place from the context. This village is
dark and gloomy, because all descriptions in the
story are in dark colors.
 Moral Values
Caring and responsible to children
As adults, we should set a good example and children in need,
especially since the orphans can't fend for themselves.

empathy and patience when encountering others who
are in a less fortunate situatuion than us.
