In 1955, the world mourned the loss of Albert Einstein, who had passed
away at the age of 76. His death was a major blow to the scientific community,
and his colleagues and friends expressed their condolences in various ways.
One of the most notable expressions of condolence came in the form of a joint
letter written by two of Einstein’s closest friends and colleagues, Niels Bohr and
I.I Rabi. The letter was addressed to Einstein’s son, Hans Albert, and expressed
their deep sorrow at Einstein’s passing.
In the letter, Bohr and Rabi spoke about Einstein’s extraordinary contri-
butions to science and his impact on the world. They also shared personal
anecdotes and memories of their time with Einstein, describing him as a bril-
liant, kind, and humble person.
The letter ended with a poignant tribute to Einstein, in which Bohr and
Rabi wrote, ”The memory of Einstein will remain with us forever, as a guiding
star in our thoughts and actions. In his life and work, he has shown us the way
towards a deeper understanding of the universe and of ourselves.”
The letter was widely circulated and became a symbol of the profound impact
that Einstein had on the scientific community and the world at large. It remains
a powerful tribute to one of the greatest scientific minds of all time.
