Sorority History

In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. became America's first Greek-letter organization established by Black college women. Her roots date back to Howard University, Washington, D.C., where the idea for formation was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri. Alpha Kappa Alpha is a sisterhood composed of women who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of self-fulfillment through volunteer service. Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards; promotes unity and friendship among college women; alleviates problems concerning girls and women; maintains a progressive interest in college life; and serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 260,000 women in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa. www.aka1908.org

Chapter History
On March 30, 1966, at the home of the late Nellie Wolfe Gaylord, a group of Alpha Kappa Alpha women from Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester Counties met to discuss the possibility of establishing an Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter in the South Jersey tri-county area. Gaylord, who had initiated the move, was designated to take the lead in this venture and the necessary procedures were carried out to secure the approval of a chapter. At the meeting of the international board of directors in July 1967, a charter was approved. On Saturday, November 11, 1967, Theta Pi Omega was chartered. Through the years, Theta Pi Omega has remained a dedicated arm of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
