Research question:

How does the gap of slit affect the pattern of waves?

Hypothesis:
If the gap between the slits increases, the distance between the bright and dark waves in the pattern
will increase, leading to a wider pattern. This is because the angle of diffraction increases, causing the
waves to further spread out, resulting in a wider pattern of waves.

Independent variable:
The independent variable is the different gap of the slit. This can be manipulated by using different
gaps of the slits (2cm, 4cm, 6cm, 8cm, and 10cm). The gap of the slits can be measured using a ruler.

Dependent variable:
The dependent variable is the pattern of the waves. This cannot be measured, but can be visualised.

Control variables:
The control variable is the frequency of the water wave. This can be kept controlled by setting the
vibrator and the motor at the same speed throughout the experiment. The frequency of the water wave
should be kept controlled since the pattern of the waves can vary because of the speed of the waves.

Sufficient data:
Sufficient data is collected since there are 5 different gaps of slits used. The gaps of the slits can be
measured using a ruler.

Method:
1. Set up a ripple tank, attach the straight deeper and fill in the tray with enough water until the water
touches the straight deeper.
2. Place two narrow slits parallel to each other in the centre of the tank.
3. Measure the gap of the slit until the gap between the 2 slits is 2cm and parallel to each other.
4. Turn on the ripple tank and observe the pattern of waves from the screen of the ripple tank.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 but with the gap of the slits at 4cm, 6cm, 8cm, and 10cm.
