Remembrance Day
Our National Citizenship Officer Bonnie Rees reminded us last week that the ‘war to
end all wars’ led to the mobilization of 70 million military personnel, including 60
million Europeans, making it one of the largest wars in history. It was also one of the
deadliest conflicts in history, with an estimated 9 million combatants and seven
million civilian deaths as a direct result of the war, while resulting genocides and the
1918 influenza pandemic caused another 50 to 100 million deaths worldwide.
The Royal Canadian Legion encourages us to wear a poppy as a visual pledge
to never forget those who sacrificed for our freedom. To recognize Remembrance
Day, it is a tradition to hold a time of silence as a tribute to those who fought for us.

At 11 o’clock tomorrow morning, the 11th of November, please pause for one
minute of silent reflection and remember that sacrifice.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the Crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
Lest we Forget
