Mental health versus physical health
Physically and mentally fit for work

 Wellbeing is more than just living the good life but about having
meaning in life.
 We should be both physically and mentally well in order to
function as human beings at work
 Now, with all that being said! ONE may ask what wellness
ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS, HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE PGYSICALLY
FIT BUT DIE OF DEPRESSION?
HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE MENTALLY WELL/HAPPY BUT DIE OF
PHYSICAL HEALTH RELATED ILLNESSES?
ARE YOU PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY WELL, ON A SCALE OF
TEN RATE YOUR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLN-BEING
WELLNESS

 The state of optimal well being


 Improved life quality resulting from enhanced physical and mental health
 A choice to assume responsibility for the quality of your life
 Wellness involves a number of elements such as:
 Self-responsibility
 Holistic
 Journey
 Balance
 Uniqueness
 Time
Physical wellbeing

 Physical exercise is not the only way to maintain good health


 Hence physical wellness means respecting and taking care of your body
 This includes nutrition, physical activity, sexuality, sleep, use of substances, self-
care and appropriate use of health-care systems
 Also caring for your body’s minor illnesses
 A physically well person :
 Exercise regularly
 Sleeps constantly and adequately
 Stays hydrated
 Controls meal portions and choices
 Knows important health numbers
 Avoids excessive alcohol
 Avoids use of tobacco and other harmful drugs
 Recognizes early signs of illness
Mental wellbeing
 State of realizing your own potential
 coping with the normal stresses of life
 Working productively and fruitfully
 Able to make contributions to your community
 Mental health and mental illness are not opposite
 A mentally well person:
 Connects with others
 Takes time to enjoy
 Participates and shares interests
 Contributes to their community
 Takes care of themselves
 Challenges themselves
 Deals with stress
 Notices the here and now
 Asks for help
 Laughs and smiles
I work better when I am well

 Staff wellbeing is relevant and necessary in the


modern workplace
 It is important to function well at work as much time is
spent there
 Mental health is overlooked
 People suffer symptoms of mental illness which
influences all areas of their life including work
 These symptoms may affect productivity

 Deals with all major health risks
 Offers choices
 Targets both employees and worksite

 Provides regular evaluation of its results

 Abuse is defined as a repetitive behavior from a
person/people in order to have more power
over another person
 Abuses comes in many forms , it is never
acceptable , it is damaging and dangerous
Stalking

 When someone you know or don’t follows/haunts you. Usually around the age 18-24 years
 Includes:
 Getting overwhelming texts
 Badmouth you to other people
 Being followed on social networks and Etc.
 What to do?
 Contact the police emergency number
 Try to save as much evidence as possible
 Find a witness
 Telling a trusted someone
Emotional and verbal abuse

 Can cause psychological problems


 Includes :
 Calling of names/ belittling
 Threatening to commit suicide
 Yelling at someone etc.
 What to do?
 Tell someone
 Find counselling
Financial abuse

 Varies from someone controlling someone emotionally or physically regarding their


finances
 Includes:
 Frequently checking a partners spending
 Excessive control of ones credit/debit card
 Discouraging one to spend money on themselves and etc.
 What to do
 Call the police incase of detected fraud
 Talk to a family member
 Keep your finances confidential
 Do not provide your banking details to anyone
Physical abuse

 Any physical contact that one does not approve of, usually the easier
form to identify
 May include:
 Pinching
 Poking
 Any extremely violent and life endangering contact
 It can happen at school home, streets etc
 What to do?
 Report to domestic violence helpline
 Report to the police
 speak to family member/ lecturers/friends
Sexual abuse

 When one pressured to take part sexual activitives that they are not
comfortable with
 This includes when your partner forces to kiss/ touch you sexully
 May include:
 Unwanted kissing/touching
 Rape/attempted rape
 Unwanted intercourse and etc
 What to do?
 Get away from your partner ASAP
 Report to the police
 Tell someone
 Seek counselling
Digital abuse

 Also known as cyber bullying, or when a partner controls you on your digitals
 May include:
 Your partner/ someone trying to control your cellphone
 Using of social networks to stalk someone
 Sends uncomfortable messages to someone and etc.
 What to do?
 Switch off your phone when you want to
 Say no if you don’t want your partner using your phone
 Don’t disclose your password to anyone
Avoid abuse

 Don’t go out alone


 Don’t drink and drive
 Make sure to keep safe
 Your friends’ safety is more important than their
opinion of you
 Make sure not to borrow money with strings
attached
 Set physical boundaries
DATE RAPE

 Date rape is referred to as facilitated rape, on both
men and women.
 There are drugs used in date rape which are also
known as “club drugs” as they are often used dance
clubs, concerts and raves.
 The most common drugs are: Rohypnol, GHB,
Ketamine and Alcohol.
 Consuming a lot of alcohol suppresses memory,
hence rapists use this as an advantage
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU’VE BEEN
DRUGGED?
 You feel drunk when you haven’t had any alcohol
 You wake up feeling hungover and disoriented
 You remember having a drink but cannot recall what
happened afterwards
 You find your clothes being torn or not right
 You feel like you’ve had sex but cannot remember it
HOW TO AVOID CONSUMING THESE
SUBSTANCES?

 By not accepting any offered drinks


 Opening your own drinks
 Keeping your drinks with you at all times
 Not sharing your drinks with anyone
 Not drinking from open containers
 When offered a drink pay it yourself and watch
your drink being poured
 Do not consume any drink that tastes funny or
smells strange
 If your drink is left unattended, do not drink it pour
it out
 Do not hang out with people who cannot be
trusted
