Tag Questions

They are short questions that are used at the end of a sentence to

request confirmation of information said in the previous sentence. The

sentence before the comma usually expresses an uncertain idea and

the sentence after the comma has the function of obtaining

confirmation of this possibility. One of its main characteristics is that

if the verb is in the affirmative in the sentence before the comma, the

question tag will present the verb in the negative and vice versa. To

know which verb/auxiliary should be used in the question tag, just

change the sentence before the comma to the interrogative form.

Afirmativa: tag question negativa

The girls ate the cake, didn’t they?
Cindy works hard, doesn’t she?
You can read, can’t you?
Negativa: tag question afirmativa

Your mom wasn’t happy, was she?
The babies won’t cry, will they?
