    This diagram depicts the flow of blood through the heart and lungs. Deoxygenated blood returns to the right atrium from the body via the superior and inferior vena cava. It then passes through the tricuspid valve to the right ventricle and is pumped through the pulmonary valve to the lungs via the pulmonary artery and its branches. In the lungs, the blood becomes oxygenated and returns via the pulmonary veins to the left atrium, passing through the mitral valve to the left ventricle, which pumps it through the aortic valve and arch to the body.
