1.2. HR bolts

FOR HR (HIGH RESISTANCE) BOLTS, YOU MUST FOLLOW THE TIGHTENING

TORQUE INDICATED ON THE BOLTS’ PACKAGING.
THIS, BECAUSE FOR A SAME HR BOLT, THE TIGHTENING TORQUE CAN
CHANGE ACCORDING TO THE BOLT’S SUPPLIER AND TO THE THREAD
TIGHTENING TORQUE EFFICIENCY RATIO. A TOO HIGH TIGHTENING TORQUE
CAN DEFORM THE BOLT.

GENERAL INFORMATIONS
4. SEALS AND DIAPHRAGMS STORAGE
General
Most rubber parts change in physical properties during storage and can become
unserviceable due to hardening, softening, cracking or other surface degragation. In
Sandvik products, this concerns O-rings, rubber U-cups and diaphragms (as in valves
and accumulators). Affecting factors are oxygen, ozone, heat, humidity or oils and
solvents. Especially nitrile rubber (NBR) is very sensitive! Almost all our rubber
products are nitrile rubber based. These instructions are based on several international
standards but mainly on ISO 2230.
Polyurethane parts are less sensitive than rubber parts.

Heat
The preferred storage temperature is under +25°C and over +0°C. If the temperature
goes under 0°C care should be taken to avoid distorting the rubber parts during
handling; before assembling the parts temperature should be increased slowly to room
temperature. Direct contacts to heaters, owens, radiators and direct sunlight should be
avoided.

Humidity
The relative humidity in the storage should be below 70%. Condensation of water
should not occure. This can happen if temperature frequently varies quickly; open or
unheated storage is not suitable! Parts should not be stored when they are moist.

Light
Direct sunlight or strong artificial light with ultraviolet content can be disastrous. To store
parts in individual UV-resistant bags is the best way. To cover the windows with an
orange or red coating is recommended. A day in direct sunlight can destroy a clean O-
ring!!

Oxygen
Ventilation should be kept low if possible especially if rubber parts are not stored in air
tight bags.

Ozone
It is not adviseable in the storage to have such apparatus that generates a lot of ozone
as powerful fluorescent lamps, devices with high tension current, big electric motors or
devices which can cause electric sparking.

Tension
Parts should be stored free without tension or deformation (ie. if O-rings are fitted in a
subassembly like a valve or a cylinder they are under tension). This should be avoided.

6 (8) E 19-06-2007 BF-GP-FL

GENERAL INFORMATIONS
If the assembled parts are well protected against oxygen and ozone in protective plastic
bags, they can be stored for short periods.

Dissolvents
Rubber parts are not allowed to be stored in contact with dissolvents. Never wash rubber
parts with solvents like petrol, benzene hydrocarbon or tricholroethylene before storing
them!

Other advisable rules

In good conditions five years storage period is acceptable without loosing any quality of
the rubber products. After five years properties of the products will be lost gradually but
not totally. Also a common rule is to use older parts first (FIFO).
Washing rubber parts with dissolvents (petrol, hydrocarbon , …) before using them in
service is not allowed! Dissolvents can deteriorate rubber parts quite quickly. Washing,
if needed, should be done with water and soap.

As an example, at Sandvik Mining and Construction Lyon, the storage is done in a

temperate area whitout humidity, the store parts are in UV-resitant bags. A label on the
bags indicates the delivery date and the validity date (delivery date + four years).
