Personal Philosophy Statement Assignment Reflection

Introduction

SPED 854: Family and Interprofessional Collaboration in Special Education focuses on

procedures for developing and implementing (a) instructional accountability, (b) relationships

between regular and special educators, (c) relationships among educators, families, and their

communities, (d) interdisciplinary team planning, and (e) general management responsibilities

associated with instruction of children and youth with exceptionalities within a school-wide

tiered support system. This course also addresses collaboration as a cultural practice, the role of

identity and power in collaboration, and families as assets and partners.

Description

The SPED 854 Personal Philosophy Statement Assignment required one to write a 2-

page, double-spaced summary of their thoughts relating to collaboration within special

education. The assignment was to be submitted in APA format, but no title page. Reference

Appendix A for the rubric.

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to develop a personal philosophy statement about the

meaning of collaboration in special education. The statement is meant to be a collection of one’s

beliefs around the meanings, purposes, and processes related to collaboration within special

education.

Revisions

The feedback received on this assignment was positive and no revisions were needed. I

received 100% of the possible points. Dr. Suzanne Robinson felt my statement addressed the

assignment requirements and admired my inclusivity.

Reflection

Creating my personal philosophy statement was instrumental in my development as a

special educator. I was excited for the opportunity to delve deep inside and put my thoughts

about collaboration within special education onto paper. I believe this specific assignment helped

prepare me for my future careers by allowing me develop a foundation for what it means to be a

successful special educator.
