UDL Lesson Plan Individual Assignment Reflection

Introduction

SPED 730: Characteristics, Methods, and Assessment: Introduction to Struggling

Learners & Students with High-Incidence Disabilities was designed as an introduction to the

characteristics, assessment and identification process, and initial instructional and behavioral

interventions needed in meeting the needs of students with high-incidence disabilities.

Specialized services, frameworks for instruction, conceptualizing best practice, and the role of

the educator were all explored. Tiered planning and implementation were also emphasized.

Description

The SPED 730 UDL Lesson Plan Individual Assignment consisted of two parts. Part 1

required us to go through the IRIS module and review the following portions: Challenge, Initial

Thoughts, and Perspective and Resources. We were to then watch the UDL in Action video.

After completing all steps in Part 1, Part 2 required us to identify a lesson plan, review it through

the lens of UDL, redesign the lesson plan keeping 2-3 case studies in mind, and then create a

modified lesson plan that aligns to UDL. There is no rubric to attach.

Purpose

The focus of this assignment is to further explore UDL and how you can remove barriers

to create a flexible and accessible learning experience for all students. Teachers using UDL are

intentional and purposeful when designing lessons. However, when teachers begin using the

framework, they will often adapt existing lessons to meet guidelines of UDL.

The feedback received on this assignment was positive and no revisions were needed. I

received 100% of the possible points. Dr. Sean Smith felt my lesson plan addressed the

assignment requirements and met the needs of the students.

Reflection

Creating the UDL lesson plan was instrumental in my development as a special educator.

Prior to this assignment, I didn’t realize all that went into creating a lesson plan—let alone one

that was sufficient for students of all abilities. I enjoyed the experience of getting to create a

lesson plan within UDL standards. My biggest takeaway from this assignment was that all

decisions as a special educator need to be made with your specific students in mind. Your lesson

plan is useless if you cannot reach every single student in your classroom. Small adjustments and

modifications can make a world of a difference.
