Introduction
Learners & Students with High-Incidence Disabilities was designed as an introduction to the
characteristics, assessment and identification process, and initial instructional and behavioral
Specialized services, frameworks for instruction, conceptualizing best practice, and the role of
the educator were all explored. Tiered planning and implementation were also emphasized.
Description
The SPED 730 UDL Lesson Plan Individual Assignment consisted of two parts. Part 1
required us to go through the IRIS module and review the following portions: Challenge, Initial
Thoughts, and Perspective and Resources. We were to then watch the UDL in Action video.
After completing all steps in Part 1, Part 2 required us to identify a lesson plan, review it through
the lens of UDL, redesign the lesson plan keeping 2-3 case studies in mind, and then create a
Purpose
The focus of this assignment is to further explore UDL and how you can remove barriers
to create a flexible and accessible learning experience for all students. Teachers using UDL are
intentional and purposeful when designing lessons. However, when teachers begin using the
framework, they will often adapt existing lessons to meet guidelines of UDL.

The feedback received on this assignment was positive and no revisions were needed. I

Creating the UDL lesson plan was instrumental in my development as a special educator.
Prior to this assignment, I didn’t realize all that went into creating a lesson plan—let alone one
that was sufficient for students of all abilities. I enjoyed the experience of getting to create a
lesson plan within UDL standards. My biggest takeaway from this assignment was that all
decisions as a special educator need to be made with your specific students in mind. Your lesson
plan is useless if you cannot reach every single student in your classroom. Small adjustments and
