The Teacher and School Curriculum

Module 13

CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION
Introduction:

This module will enlighten the students on curriculum implementation, the

process and provision to ensure that the newly developed curriculum and
instructional strategies are delivered at the classroom level, Understanding
curriculum implementation process will help the learner acquire knowledge or
experience.

At the end of this module, students are expected to:

1. Develop skills on the process of curriculum implementation

2. Describe each step through examples.

Discussion:

Curriculum implementation process involves helping the learner acquire

knowledges and experiences. Curriculum implementation cannot take place without the
students, therefore they are the central figure in curriculum implementation process. Curriculum
implementation may also refer to the art of working out the plans and suqquestion that have
been made by curriculum specialist and subject experts in a classroom or school settings. In
curriculum implementation, teachers are the main curriculum implementers while parents,
administrators may be directly or indirectly involved in the implementation process.

Some insights for curriculum Implementation, putting into practice, the written
curriculum has been designed in the syllabi, course of study, curricular guides and subject. It is
a process wherein the learners acquire the planned or intended knowledge, skills and attitude.

One of the proponents of curriculum implementation was Ornstein and Hunkins –

they posit the idea that there is an interaction between the curricula that has been written and
planned and the teachers who’s in charge to deliver it.

It implies the following:

 Shift from what is current to a new or enhanced curriculum

 Change knowledge, actions attitude of the person involved
 Change behaviour using new strategies and resources
 Change which requires efforts hence goals should be achievable

Classroom Context – means teaching what has been written in the lesson plan. Implementing
means using the plan as a guide to engage with the learner in the teaching –learning process
with the end in view that learning occurred could be learning outcomes that have been
achieved.

Concept of Change – change is constant and a law of nature. It always bring improvements,
technological advancement and explosions of knowledge is the basic reason of varying style of
knowledge. Change is an going, almost unconscious process that involves reworking familiar
element to new relationships.

Some of the forces Driving Curriculum Change

 National imposition
 Local need
 Staff dissatisfaction
 They can be maintained in the view of challenge of new course
 Standard
 Parental demands
 Leadership: meaningful change and curriculum development

Curriculum Change – changing curriculum changes individuals. It must be necessary in

consideration that the resources of implementation of curriculum is available or not.

DRIVING FORCES RESTRAINING FORCES

1. Government interventions 1. Fear of the unknown

2. Society’s values 2. Negative attitudes to change
3. Technological change 3. Tradition Values
4. Knowledge explosion 4. Limited Resources
5. Obsolete equipment
5. Administrative support

The presence of driving forces and restraining order provide equilibrium in

curriculum implementation.
