percentage, rate and base;
b. write the meaning of percentage, rate and base and
c. manifest cooperation among members of the group.

d. Checking of assignment Yes Ma’am
Class do we have an assignment? The pupils will pass their assignment.
Please pass your assignment forward.
e. Motivation
Before we proceed to our lesson, I will
teach you a new song about our subject
which Math.
Are you all excited? Yes Ma’am
Are you familiar with the song “Are you
sleeping?” Yes Ma’am
Very good, because that will be the tune
of our song. I will sing it first ,you listen
and after I sing you will be singing with
me. Is that clear? Yes Ma’am
Song:
I LOVE MATH

I love math (2x)
It is so exciting
Very interesting
I love math (2x)
( REPEAT )
The pupils will sing the song
Everybody sing. Yes Ma’am
Did you enjoy the song?
Now we can proceed to our lesson.

Very good! Percent, came from the
Latin word “per centum” which means Hundred
for every? Remove the % symbol and write the

because percent means for every
hundred.

II. LESSON PROPER

A. Activity
I will divide the class into 2 groups. The
girl group and the boy group.
I have here a problem:
Summer season is coming, and Jane is so
excited to do her shopping. In her list is a
pair of slippers that she will wear for their
outing. What made her more excited was
when she saw that her dream pair of
slippers is on sale. From Php. 4,295, it is
now sold with 20% discount! How much
will Jane save if she buys the slipper?

Discussed with your group and answer the

following questions:
1. What is being asked in the problem?
2. How much is the price of the slipper?
3. How much is the discount?
4.What are the given in the problem?

B. Analysis

The teacher will gather and post the work of

every group.
Let us all discussed your answers. First How much will Jane save if she buys the
question, shoes? Ma’am.
What is being asked in the problem? It’s Php. 4, 295.00 Ma’am.
Alright, How much is the price of the slipper? 20% Ma’am
How much is the discount?
Very good! So what are the given in the It is Php. 4,295.00 and 20%
problem?

Alright! All your answers are correct, let us

now proceed to our topic.

C. Abstraction
Our topic for today is about the meaning of the
elements used in solving percentage problems.

Rate (R) is the number of hundredths parts

taken which is given in terms of percent. It
appears before the word “of”, and it is written
with the % symbol.

Base (B) refers to the whole on which the rate

operates. It appears after the word “of”.

Percentage (P) is the part of the base

determined by the rate. It appears before or
after the word “is”.

Example 1:

There are 40 pupils in Grade 5 – Avocado.

Seventy percent pupils are girls. How many are
girls in the class?
The given data are 40 pupils, 70% are girls.
We will answer it through an illustration.

Each boxes represents every students, and each

rows represents the percent. We are going to
find out how many girls are there in the class.
70% of the class is girls , so therefore there are
28 girls in the class.

Now, what do we call 40 in the given data?

This is what we call the base. Because it is the
number of the Grade 5 Avocado or the whole.
And the 70% is the rate and the 28 is the
percentage it is from the base depending on the
rate.

Let us have another example,

Rye has 50 popsicle sticks. 36% of it are red. If
N is the number of red popsicle sticks. How to
solve for N?
36% of 50 is N
Let us first determine the rate, base and
percentage.
Yes Ma’am
36% is the rate (because it has the % symbol)
50 is the base ( it appears after the word “of”)
N is the percentage ( it appears after the word
“is”)

Are we all clear?

Okay , last example.

(The pupils will paste their answer on the
board.)

Identify the base , rate and percentage:

No Ma’am.
