A FILM REVIEW
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a fantasy film by director David Yates. It is based on the
novel of the same name written by J.K Rowling and the main characters are played by well-known
actors: Daniel Radcliffe stars as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasly, Emma Watson as
Hermione Granger, Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange, Jim Broadbent as Horace
Slughorn, Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy, Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore and Alan Rickman
as Severus Snape.

The plot is very convincing, but it won’t be so easy to follow if the viewer doesn’t read the
previous books: it’s the sixth year at Hogwarts and for Harry nothing feels the same; his godfather
Sirius Black is dead and even the school is no longer a safe place. Voldemort has created an army
of Deatheater and Harry understand that the time has come to face his destiny.

The main characters and the relationships between them are convincing, in fact the actors bring
them to life very well. They all have an interesting and unique personality, and their arguments
and misunderstandings are entertaining. Some of them are also very humourus, like Ron Weasly,
for example, who is the most comic character of the whole franchise, but he is also loyal to his
friends; his typic line that he says when he is scared or surprised is: “Bloody hell!”. The dialogues
are never dull because the plot have a lot of surprises, but some scenes are very different from
those described in the novel: for example, in the film the viewer can see Nymphadora Tonks, a
minor character, only for a few seconds, but in the novel she is the one who finds Harry petrified
by Draco on the train. The special effects are spectacular and the soundtrack is memorable. The
locations suit the film, but the scenes are not as bright as those of previous films: probably
because the director wanted to remark that the story is set in a time of war, so he made them
darker to show the sadness.

To sum up, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is one of the best films of the whole franchise,
in fact director David Yates has done a very good job. The one thing I could say after seeing this
film is: “Bloody hell! It was fantastic!”.
