CHALLENGING PROBLEMS IN PHYSICS

INDIAN SCHOOL OF PHYSICS

[ NITIN SACHAN ]

1. A small ball falls without initial velocity on the plane A, which is the angle with the

horizon (see fig). After what time will it hit the plane B? Planes A and B form a right

angle, impacts on them are absolutely elastic. The distance from the point of origin of the

fall to the plane B is equal to l, the acceleration of gravity g.

2. A small ball falls without a start from a certain height H to a system of two fixed wedges,

the upper face of which form angle with the horizon (see fig). The place of the fall is

located at a distance l horizontally from the line of contact of the wedges. After

experiencing three absolutely elastic impacts on the wedges. The ball rises again the same

height. Specify the possible types of ball movement trajectories and calculate the height

H in the simplest case.

3. In a flexible cord slides through a thin smooth pipeline (see figure). The AB and BC
sections of the pipeline are semicircles with radius R; the length of the cord is L=2 .
At some point in time, the lower end of the shoelace is at point C, and the upper end is at
point A. Find all the points on the shoelace in which to the problem as shown in figure,
its tension force at this moment is zero.

4. Two nails are driven into the vertical wall so that they lie on the same vertcial line. A
piece of homogeneous wire with a mass of m was bent into an arc leaned on the lower
nail B. Find the magnitude of the force with which the wire presses on the upper nail, if it
is known that in the absence of the lower nail, when the wire is in equilibrium, the
diameter of the arc AC is the angle 0 with the vertical. The distance between the nails is

equal to the radius of the arc. There is no friction.

5. At a height of 2R above the horizontal plane A small weight of mg is suspended on a
flexible weightless rope with a length of 2R (see figure). What is the smallest horizontal
force F to be applied to a cylinder with radius R in order to slowly push it under this
pendulum? There is no friciton.

6.
composed of two single thin square plates with a side of l=40cm, fastened with sticky
tape from one edge (see figure). What angle with the plates form at equilibrium?

7. Two identical loads are connected a thread of length l. A second thread of the same
length is attached to one of the loads. The system is located on a horizontal rough surface.
The free end of the thread is slowly moved along the arc of the circle. It is known that
with steady motion, the angle between the threads is (see figure). Find the radius of the
circle along which the free end of the thread is moved.
