Article Review

The article "Cartels in the Age of Algorithms: Need of a Holistic View" tries to depict the anti-
competitive behaviour portrayed by several corporations and primarily focuses on the pricing
algorithm and the connivance of those companies claimed to be a part of such cartels.
The author goes on to assert how the formation of a cartel will be detrimental to the consumer
and, eventually, the nation's economy as a whole. The article goes on to further elucidate
concepts like algorithmic collusion with the help of a precedent. Though the article aims to find
outlay theories related to the aforementioned allegation, the question of whether it has achieved
the objective is unclear.

Assuming one ignores the small yet significant grammatical inconsistencies at places, the article
fails to make up in substance what it lacks in presentation. No solid grounds as such have been
given for the allegations that the author claims exist; instead, the author only manages to provide
an example of a case of such Algorithm based Cartel allegations, which ultimately the court had
ruled against. The SC judgement that the author has cited only shows that the “NCLAT and CCI
must hold their doors open even for those who aren't directly affected by an issue”. It fails to
show that the court acted against such a cartel claimed to be in existence.

To summarise, the author claims that a cartel exists, but they fail to provide any solid proof for
the allegation he has made when something even as simple as a newspaper article would've
immensely helped the author build his argument. The article is reasonably well-written and
passes the novelty criteria, as it is relevant in the contemporary scenario. However, it lacks
substance in terms of logical consistency and research, and I believe that strongly disqualifies
this article.
