Course Title: CE 105/CE 412 – Geotechnical Engineering I(Soil Mechanics)

Course Credit: 4 Units Contact Hrs/Week: 6 hrs
Course Description: This course deals with the study of the identification and classification of soils and rocks, Site
investigation and subsurface exploration, the physical and index properties of soil, compaction, water
flow through soils, subsurface stress and deformation phenomena in soils, laboratory testing, and the
relevance of these topics as they affect soil strength, compressibility, stability, and drainage. A
thorough knowledge of engineering geology and the mechanics of deformable bodies is imperative.
Prerequisite: ES 215/ ES 223e
Course Learning Outcomes: This course is designed to enhance the students’ understanding on geotechnical engineering,
specifically, able to:
1. Discuss on soil and its properties,
2. Define geotechnical engineering,
3. Learn from geotechnical failures,
4. Determine the composition of soils,
5. Know the soil phases and its relationship,
6. Determine the liquid, plastic, and shrinkage limit using laboratory test,
7. Identify the plasticity, liquidity, consistency, flow, and toughness index as a result tested in
the Atterberg limits,
