Use the Proper Engine Protection, Warm-Up, and

Maintenance for G3600Engines {1000}
SMCS - 1000

Engine:

G3606 (S/N: 3XF1-UP; 4ZS1-UP)

G3608 (S/N: 4WF1-UP; BEN1-UP)

G3612 (S/N: BKE1-UP; 1YG1-UP)

G3616 (S/N: BLB1-UP; 4CG1-UP)

ReferenceOperation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6278, "G3606 and G3608 Engines" (3XF
and 4WF)

ReferenceOperation and Maintenance Manual,, "G3612 and G3616 Engines" (1YG and 4CG)

ReferenceOperation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7563, "G3600 Engines" (4ZF, BEN, BKE,
and BLB)

Follow the recommendations of the engine Operation and Maintenance Manual in order to achieve
improved reliability and improved service life for the engine.

Certain measures are very important for the prevention of piston seizure. To help prevent such an
occurrence, adhere to the following recommendations for engine protection, for warm-up, and for
maintenance of the cooling system.

The programmable parameter "High Engine Oil to Engine Coolant Differential Temperature" can
activate a warning or a shutdown. The parameter is intended to prevent a condition with cool
jacket water and hot engine oil. Because there is usually a difference between the temperature of
the jacket water and of the engine oil during start-up and during warm-up, the "High Engine Oil to
Engine Coolant Differential Temperature" parameter does not have any effect on operation until
the engine load achieves 50 percent.

It is preferable for the jacket water to be slightly warmer than the engine oil. However, the engine
oil usually warms up faster than the jacket water. This creates a condition with a cool cylinder
liner and a hot piston. This condition can cause seizure of the piston. The programmable
parameter "High Engine Oil to Engine Coolant Differential Temperature" is intended to help
prevent the condition.

Programming the "High Engine Oil to Engine Coolant Differential Temperature" to a precise
tolerance prevents loading before the engine is properly warmed up. Follow these
recommendations:

• For the warning level, program the parameter to 1° C (2° F).

• For the shutdown, program the parameter to 3° C (5° F).

Operation During Warm-Up

Proper operation during engine warm-up is essential for avoiding premature wear and possible
damage to the engine. Train the operator to follow these recommendations for loading of the
engine and for monitoring of the temperatures:

• After start-up, keep the engine load to a minimum during warm-up.

• Before applying a load on the engine up to a maximum of 49 percent, ensure that the
minimum temperature of the jacket water is 38° C (100° F) and the minimum temperature
of the engine oil is 10° C (50° F).

• Before applying a load on the engine from 50 to 100 percent, ensure that the minimum
temperature of the jacket water and of the engine oil is 50° C (122° F).

Note: For an engine that operates with a programmable logic controller (PLC), program the
requirements for loading of the engine into the PLC.

Maintenance
Maintain the engine's cooling system according to the engine's Operation and Maintenance
Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule".

• Check the coolant level. Maintain the correct coolant level. Perform daily inspections.

• Maintain the correct coolant mixture.

• Drain the coolant and replace the coolant.

• Replace the coolant temperature regulators. Malfunctioning temperature regulators can

prevent the engine from reaching the proper operation temperature.
