DAY HIKING CHECKLIST

When preparing for a day hiking trip, it's easy to forget things. You may
not need everything on this list for your day hike, but print this out and
give it a glance every time you pack for a trip to make sure you don't
forget anything essential!

THE BASICS SAFETY ITEMS


Daypack (20-30L) Small first aid kit

Enough water + water Water filter or iodine tabs


reservoir and/or bottle
Emergency fire starter
Food/electrolytes (roughly
200 calories every hour) Utility knife
Spork/Container (maybe) Headlamp (+ extra batteries)
Trowel & basic toiletry kit Sunscreen & SPF lip balm
Trekking poles (if wanted) Bug repellent (if needed)
Permit (if needed) Pepper spray / bear spray (if
needed/solo)
Camera/backup portable

CLOTHING
battery (if needed)

Credit card / some cash / ID


Clothes to wear + Shoes

NAVIGATION Wool socks (+ 1 extra pair)

GPS (handheld or app) Sunglasses

Physical map (can be Hat and/or Beanie

Rain jacket or poncho
Compass Down jacket (even if not cold,
for emergencies)
SOS satellite device (if you

Sometimes there are items you might like to bring with you regularly
that aren't listed above. Personalize your list by adding those items you
may want to remember for day hikes using the space below. I've listed
some example items from my own personal list below for you.

Headphones + download podcasts or music

Paper tape for blisters/hot spots

Fitness watch

IMPORTANT PRE-HIKE TO-DOS:


If using GPS App - Make sure maps are downloaded for offline use
Send a trusted friend/contact details about your day hike & how
long you expect to be gone + how you'll communicate with them
when you get back

Make sure your phone & electronics are fully charged pre-hike (i.e.
GPS, SOS device, watch, etc.) - if long hike consider bringing a
backup external battery
Check the weather before you go (adjust plans accordingly)
