V228 and V250 Oil Mist Detector Nuisance Alarms

Problem Description: Certain V228 and V250 marine customers are experiencing nuisance alarm
trips. In some cases these alarms have resulted in engine shutdowns. Based on field test data on
certain engines, the following parameter settings have been recommended for application to all
fielded engines at the next available opportunity.

Workscope
With the OMD power turned on, connect the provided communication cable to the serial port on the
laptop and then to the communication port on the OMD (see below picture)

Once the cable is connected, open the windows hyperterminal program on the laptop. Start >
Programs > Accessories > Communication > Hyperterminal (if program is not found, do a windows
search for hyperterminal.*).

When hyperterminal opens you will enter a name for the connection and hit Enter. When the
“Connect To” window opens, select COM1 in the connect using dropdown menu (see Figure 2).

When COM1 is selected, the properties window will open. Select 9600 bits per second, 8 data bits,
none parity, 1 stop bit, and none flow control, then hit OK (see Figure 3)

Now the hyperterminal window will be open and should show as connected. Go to the Transfer menu
and select capture text (see below figure).

Select a location to store the file, name the file using engine serial number, then hit start capture. This will
capture all of the commands and save it to a very small text file. After the capture has been setup, follow
steps 1-5.

1) Readout of OMD Memory: Press CTRL+E and also press ENTER (RETURN). This will show the last
240 events that have occurred.
2) Readout of Current Parameter List: Press CTRL+R and also press ENTER (RETURN). This will show
the parameter list.
3) Change of Parameters: Press CTRL+P and also press ENTER (RETURN). This will bring up a prompt
with P00. Then press ENTER (RETURN) again and 00000 will come up. Type 09876 and then press
ENTER (RETURN). The mist detector is able to have the parameters modified. Using the
appropriate table (V228 or V250), modify parameters P16, P20, P26, P27, P37, P38, P39, P48, and
P62. Once all parameters have been modified, enter the value of 99 in any parameter to exit.
4) Readout of Newly Changed Parameter List: Press CTRL+R and also press ENTER (RETURN). This
will show the parameter list.
5) Stop Hyperterminal Capture: In hyperterminal window, go to the transfer menu and stop capture
of text. Then find the file in the location you specified and email the file to Scott Snyder
(Scott.Snyder@trans.ge.com).
