DH 111 – Interim Term Test #3 Review - 2020

Lymphatic System

 Know:
 Define lymphatic system
A system of channels parallel the venous blood vessels but are more
numerous. Part of the immune system consisting of vessels, nodes,
ducts, and tonsils.
 Lymph vessels and relation to venous vessels

 Define lymph
 Lymph vessles: tissue fluid drains from the surrounding regions into the
lymphatic region

 Define lymph nodes

Organized, bean-shaped lymphoid tissue that filters the lymph by way of

lymphocytes and is grouped into clusters along the connecting lymphatic
vessels

 Afferent vessels/hilus/efferent vessel

Afferent vessels: type of lymphatic vessel with lymph flowing into the lymph
node
Hilus: depression on one side of a lymph node where lymph flows out by way
of efferent lymphatic vessel
Efferent vessel: type of lymphatic vessel with lymph flowing out of the
lymph node in the area of the node’s hilus
 Primary node/secondary node
Primary nodes: lymph node draining lymph deom a particular region
Secondary nodes: lymph node draining lymph from primary node
 Lymph node diagram
 Define lymph duct

 What drains into right lymphatic duct/thoracic duct

Right lymphatic duct: drains into the venous component at the junction of
the right subclavian and right internal jugular veins
Thoracic duct: left subclavian and left internal jugular veins. From the left
arm and thorax
 Lymphadentitis/lymphadenopathy/metastasis

 Know what the masses of lymphoid tissue located in the oral cavity and
pharynx are called.

 Know the characteristics of a healthy lymph node versus unhealthy.

 Know where the palatine and lingual tonsils are located.

 Know Lymph nodes of the head - which nodes are superficial or deep or
both?
 Know the primary lymph nodes that drain the face (facial lymph nodes)

 Know the superficial lymph nodes

 Know which nodes are responsible for draining most of the teeth and
associated periodontium and gingiva

 Know which nodes drain the lower incisors and associated periodontium and
gingiva

 Know how lymph drains – eg. Primary-secondary

 Know into what cervical node do the majority of the head nodes drain

Glandular System

 Know what nervous system controls the salivary gland and know what type of
gland they are.

 Know which glands are encapsulated and which aren’t.

 What duct is associated with the submandibular, Parotid and sublingual

salivary glands?

 Know the types of saliva that are secreted from each salivary glands (minor
and major)

 What gland is not innervated by the facial (VII) cranial nerve?

 Know the difference between exocrine and endocrine gland. Which

endocrine gland is the largest?

 Know where the salivary glands are located (major and minor).

 What gland is associated with the tongue and know its secretion

 Know difference between serous and mucous secretions.

 What is a Ranula?
 What is the sublingual caruncle?

 What is the intraoral landmark for the parotid salivary duct?
