Impact of Leadership on Job Satisfaction

Leadership creates an impact on how the employee will work for the organization. The roles
of leaders have changed to a great extent. How much successful an organization will be is
dependent on the leadership style and the leaders followed by the job satisfaction of
employees. The good leaders give proper direction which encourages the employees to
achieve desired goals; and employees with high job satisfaction are able to perform
effectively and pursue organizational interests. It has been found that there are various
forms of leadership which are being used by leaders in accordance with the organizational
environment and deal with employees.

Job satisfaction is defined as a positive emotional status from the point of view of job or
experience in work. It explains the attitude of an employee towards his/her job. It has been
found that if the job is fulfilling and rewarding then the employees are satisfied with their
jobs. The level of satisfaction is directly proportional to the success of organization. The
theory of transformational and transactional leadership shows that the leaders have a great
influence on the way their subordinates complete their work. The job satisfaction is basically
divided into 3 major aspects – extrinsic, intrinsic and general job satisfaction. The scales of
extrinsic and intrinsic satisfaction scale is found from the theory of Herzberg. The intrinsic
satisfaction is directly related to motivators like job content and working with others. The
extrinsic job satisfaction is linked with aspects like company policies, compensation and
supervision.

Different studies have been performed, which revealed different conclusions.

1. In 2012 a research was conducted which determined the effect of autrocratic and
democratic leadership styles on job satisfaction in both public and private schools. It
has been revealed that the type of leadership always impact the job satisfaction
within the employees. During that study the result showed that the teachers in public
schools have high level of job satisfaction that the teachers in private schools. It was
found that the type leadership in public schools makes the teachers feel fearless so
that they are able to discuss the issues with their leaders and create a sense of
responsibility within them.
2. In 2011 a study is conducted which indicated that if there is transformational
leadership style, then there will be a stronger relationship with job satisfaction,
whereas in case of transactional leadership style, it was seen that there is negative
relationship. The study concluded that transformational leadership is suitable for
managing government organizations.
3. In 2015 a study examined the effect of leadership style on job satisfaction and tried to
understand that how the organizational politics had an intermediating role in
reference to job satisfaction. The researcher used a descriptive research design and
conducted the research. They selected the sample through non-probability
convenience sampling. It was revealed that transformational leadership have positive
influence on job satisfaction while transactional leadership have negative influence
on job satisfaction. The verdict was out in the form that the apparent organizational
politics moderately effect organization within leadership styles and job satisfaction.
