I. Research Topic: Bridge Resource Management & Ship Navigation: Effective Management and
Utilization of Nautical Publications in Passage Planning

II. Research Title: Towards a Simplified Navigation: A Reference Book for MMMA Cadets on
Optimized Utilization of Nautical Publications for Passage Planning

III. Significance of the research project: This study will be beneficial to the institution, instructors,
and cadets. Marine Transportation cadets will be able to arrange their voyages more easily
and utilize nautical publications more proficiently if they use the guidebook with easy-to-
understand and clear instructions.

IV. Research Question or Problem Statement (General):

The purpose of this research study is to have a Reference Book for MMMA Cadets on
Optimized Utilization of Nautical Publications for Passage Planning.
V. Specific Research Questions
1. What is the significance of providing a reference book as a guide for the MMMA cadet’s use
of nautical publications?
2. What are the of MMMA cadets’ problems associated with the reference materials for the
utilization of nautical publications?
3. What are the factors that hinder the students understanding on the utilization of nautical
publications?

VI. Theoretical or Conceptual Framework (discuss briefly)

Guided learning is a term that refers to a process in which learners initiate and advance
their learning guided by more experienced partners and socially derived sources, such as tools,
text, and/or other artifacts. This process of learning is seen as being distinct from didactic
instruction comprising unidirectional interaction between more and less knowledgeable
interlocutors, as in teaching. In contrast, the direction and process of guided learning is premised
more on the learners’ intentions, capacity, and agency, albeit being guided by social partners and
norms and forms. This guidance will likely take two forms: (1) close interpersonal interactions
with more informed partners (e.g., experts, teachers, parents) and (2) indirect guidance from
observing and interacting with others, artifacts and social forms and norms (Billett 2000).
