Elizabeth I Vs.

Elizabeth II
Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I was born on September 7th, 1533 in Greenwich England. She was the daughter of
Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. Elizabeth’s childhood was boisterous after her father executed her
mother when she was 2 years old. After her father and brother passed away, Mary, her older
sister took to the throne. Looking at Mary’s Catholic background and Elizabeth’s Protestant
background, both sisters faced conflicts between each other. At one point, Mary actually threw
Elizabeth into the tower. When Mary died on November 17th, 1558, Elizabeth was crowned
queen. Elizabeth was a leader that set the stage for the economy as well as the arts.

In 1567, Elizabeth arrested her cousin Mary Queen Of Scots due to Mary’s many attempts of
assassinations. Finally, she had Mary executed in 1587. Though Elizabeth’s reign was strong,
she had yet to be married and produce an air at the age of 34. In 1588, Elizabeth’s army defeated
the invading Spanish armada, which was considered the most powerful force in Europe during
that time. Elizabeth I passed away on March 24th, 1603 after ruling for an impressive 44 years.

Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II was born on April 21st,1926 in London. She was the daughter of Queen
Elizabeth The Queen Mother and George VI. When Elizabeth was as young as 9 years old her
grandfather passed away, and her uncle became King, known as King Edward VIII. During
World War II, Elizabeth II was only 14 years old, but she decided to make appearances on live
radio broadcasts. Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Margaret worked in Hospitals to help out.
Elizabeth was crowned on June 2nd, 1953.

In 1947, Elizabeth married her distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten. They had four children, her
son Charles born in 1948, her daughter Anne in 1950, her son Andrew in 1960, and lastly her
son Edward in 1964. On February 6th, 1942, her father passed away, and she became Queen. In
1953, Elizabeth II televised her coronation, that had never been done before.

The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years on throne) in 1977 and Golden Jubilee (50
years on the throne) in 2002. In 2012 Elizabeth II celebrates 60 years of rule with a Diamond
Jubilee, it was so important to Elizabeth because it symbolised that she had ruled for an amazing
60 years.
Similarities
The two reigns are an intriguing study in contradictions. The Elizabethan age was known to be
one of the greatest time periods recorded in History. Even though they had their similarities,
they also had their differences. Elizabeth I ruled for 44 years, however, Elizabeth II has already
been on the throne for 63 profound years. Therefore, Elizabeth II was able to celebrate her
Diamond Jubilee (60 years on the throne) but Elizabeth I could not. Also, did you know that
both Elizabeth the 1st and 2nd took to the throne at the age of 25. Plus, neither of them expected
to be Queen because they were originally 3rd in line to the throne, so it was quite unexpected.

Both Queens also had a great interest in horses and arts. Adding on, none of the two Queens had
a full-blooded brother. Elizabeth I had a half-brother and Elizabeth II didn’t have a brother at all.
Fun Fact, Elizabeth I had a brother-in law named Philip and Elizabeth II’s husband's’ name was
Philip as well!

Differences
Though they are both very well known queens, they have their differences. Elizabeth I had
nothing but English blood in her veins, however, Elizabeth II had a higher percentage of
German blood and barely a drop of English blood. Elizabeth I only ruled England and Ireland,
whereas Elizabeth II ruled many countries such as; United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New
Zealand and Jamaica. During Elizabeth I’s time being an English Monarch she had a vast
amount of power, however Elizabeth II, constitutional monarch, led her to not have a lot of
power. That leads to the next point, Elizabeth II got married to Prince Philip while Elizabeth I
chose not to marry. This was because Elizabeth I didn’t want to share her
