What is multimedia?

The word multimedia is composed of two parts: the

prefix multi and media.
– Multi = Plural, more than 1, many
– Media = Medium of communication
Multimedia
Definition MULTIMEDIA
• Multimedia is the presentation of a computer application
incorporating media elements such as text, graphics,
animations, audio, and video
• Multimedia is any combination of digitally manipulated text,
graphics, sound, animation and video.
Definition(s)- MA vs MS

• A Multimedia Application(MA) is an application

which uses a collection of multiple media
sources e.g. text, graphics, images,
sound/audio, animation and/or video
• A Multimedia System(MS) is a system capable
of processing multimedia data and applications
Multimedia Applications

• World Wide Web

• Multimedia Authoring, e.g. Adobe/MacromediaDirector
• Video-on-demand
• Interactive TV
• Computer Games
• Virtual reality
• Digital video editing and production systems
• Multimedia Database systems
• Home shopping , etc
Categorization of Multimedia
• A Multimedia Project is identified as Linear when:
– It is not interactive
– User have no control over the content that is being showed to them
Example:
• A movie
• A non-interactive lecture / demo show

• A Multimedia Project is identified as Non-Linear when:

– It is interactive
– Users have control over the content that is being showed to them.
– Users are given navigational control
Example:
• Games
• Courseware
• Interactive CD
Multimedia Systems

• •Generally used for the:

– –Processing
– –Storage
– –Generation
– –Manipulation and
– –Delivery of Multimedia information
Characteristics of Multimedia System(MS)

• MS must be computer controlled

• MS are integrated.
• The information they handle must be
represented digitally.
• The interface to the final presentation of media
is usually interactive.
Challenges of Multimedia Systems
•Distributed Networks
–Interactivity, digital representation, computer controlled data – a challenge when networks are
distributed
•Temporal relationship between data
–To continuously provide different data/media at the same time
–Sequencing within the media
•Playing frames in correct order/time frame in video
•Synchronisation— inter-media scheduling
-E.g.Video and Audio— Lip synchronisation is clearly important for
humans to watch playback of video and audio and even animation and audio.
•Ever tried watching an out of (lip) sync film for a long time?
•Capacity- Network bandwidth for transmission
What is Hypertext and Hypermedia?

• Hypertext is a text which contains link to other

texts. ( e.g. PDF Documents, Word Documents)
• Hypermedia is not constrained to be t. It can
include other media, e.g. graphics, images , and
especially the continuous media - sound and
video .(e.g. www)
Elements of Multimedia

• Text – Displays word on screen – is the base layer of almost all

programs. Text is still the quickest programs will always use it.
• Pictures – Multimedia computes can display photograph, quality
can display photograph , quality pictures on the monitor.
• Movies – with a multimedia program, your computer can turn
into a TV set.
• Animation – Sometimes animation can express a point better
than movies.
• Sound – A biting dinosaur isn’t much impressive unless you can
hear the bone crunches as well.
